That looks good. A higher resolution screen in the same size as the Glo. And with that name, it makes me wonder if the Glo will be kept but the Aura will disappear.

The price is interesting. The site has the Glo HD at $219, Aura at $279 but on sale at $249 and the H2O at $299. Those are NZ prices. Here, the H2O is $229 and the Aura $189 but I have seen it for $159. And the last time I saw a Glo, it was $159. Those suggests the Glo HD would be roughly the same price as the Glo here. That would be good. And far too tempting :)

GeoffR 04-05-2015 04:19 AM

Looks good to me, I'm glad they've gone with a recessed screen, hopefully that means IR touch too.

My only worry: I can't see any sign of an external SD slot.

I think that site has the Aura mixed up with the Aura HD: Normal Aura price here is $199, it is the Aura HD that has recently been reduced to $249.

That makes some sense. But, the difference in price between the Aura and the Aura H2O is a lot more than here. But based on the differences, it would probably put the Glo HD $199 here.

Oh good timing, mother in law is going home at the end of the month! No word on US pricing yet.

That case looks super weird....I wish the device dimensions were posted so I could see if I have a case that will fit!

PO40600 04-05-2015 09:00 AM

I hope that the reader's designers won't follow the same way as the smartphones designers, with ridiculous inflation of screen resolution. For example, 2560 x 1600 on 5,7" screen inches.

Such resolutions (on smartphones) are quite ridiculous, and causes dramatic drops of autonomy .

PeterT 04-05-2015 09:45 AM

I've tried searching in the FCC database for this device and can't find it. Maybe someone with more tricks than me might have some luck. (I'm assuming that the device has an ID that contains N437 from the SKU N437-KU-BK-K-EP).

The Glo HD was created to complete against the Kindle Voyage.

The Glo HD specs are better than its current Kobo line-up.

1448×1072 resolution, 300 dpi

Aura H2O Specs:
Extra-large 6.8” Carta E Ink HD touchscreen
1430 x 1080, 265 dpi

Aura HD Specs:
6.8" Pearl E Ink Screen ClarityScreen
1440 x 1080, 265 dpi

Aura Specs:
6" High-res Pearl E Ink ClarityScreen with low-flash waveform;
1024 x 758, 16 level grey scale

Glo Specs:
6" XGA Pearl E Ink touchscreen
1024x768 resolution, 16-level grey scale

Kindle Voyage Specs:

Very nice! Amazon has just been outdone once again.

It's too soon to say that. Unless you are talking about the ability to add fonts and change margins that every Kobo has.

I can't wait to compare the Glo HD to the Voyage.

I can't wait to compare the Glo HD to the Voyage.

I have three ereaders and a HDX so I don't need a new ereader but I'll be following this to see how it performs against the voyage.

booklover6 04-05-2015 02:12 PM

I love the screen, the text sharpness, the lighting, of the Voyage very much, but love everything else about the Kobo much more, so I have been waiting for this one. I keep checking the Chapters site, not there yet.

DNSB 04-05-2015 02:52 PM

Perhaps I'm feeling a bit cynical but given that the FCC database when searched on Netronix (NOI) does not show an entry for NOIKBN437, Kobo's web page does not mention the device, the Japanese PDF file link in an earlier message points to a koboglo_safety_jp.pdf file with rather large SAR values compared to other Kobo devices and the date of the announcement...

SAR values
1.6 Aura H2O: 0.61 "Glo HD": 1.37

2.0 Aura H2O: 0.820 "Glo HD": 1.33

I'm in the market for a new ereader. This could be it. Hoping it has a sd card slot.

isaacbh 04-05-2015 04:19 PM

I'm definitely buying this. I love my h2o, but it's not the best device for one handed use. This one sounds like the best of both worlds: the perfect size and high dpi of the Voyage and the even lighting and customisibility of the kobo range.

I'm more of a big screen person but 530dpi at smartphone viewing ranges (15-30cm?) doesn't seem unreasonable, although you wouldn't want to go much beyond that.

Back to the topic, the Glo name is the most interesting aspect of this. I'd have guessed their next 6" model would either be called the Aura or Aura plus a new suffix.

I'm guessing this is a direct replacement for the Glo, transitioning it to new screen technology.

I wonder where that leaves the Aura. It could have been a failed model, but the name is obviously strong enough to have used in on the H2O so why not replace it with this model?

I wonder if Kobo are targeting the Aura at a different audience to the Glo, perhaps as a model that follows fashion more closely than the usability-focused Glo?

Sounds like wrongly dated April Fools Day joke. None of the other sites have any mention of a new Glo

Looking at the images on the Mighty Apes page, they show a date of 2015-Mar-31 so just in time for 2015-Apr-01. Oddly, I noticed the Angus & Robertson page has a Glo HD item with a non-functioning pre-order button.

murg 04-05-2015 08:39 PM

And I've finally gotten my Glo down to less than $1 per book...

murg 04-05-2015 08:42 PM

Mighty Apes site says it's to be released on 1 May.

Considering that it usually takes a few months for the new devices to make down to this part of the world, that seems a bit early.

ottdmk 04-05-2015 09:04 PM

I think using the Glo brand makes a lot of sense. Keep Touch for the budget end, Glo for the high-end 6" market, and Aura for the large size 6.8" (or maybe a little larger someday? :) ) market.

I always thought calling the Aura the Aura when you already had the Aura HD was a mistake.

Looks pretty nice, but despite the higher resolution if my Aura HD ever bites the dust I'll be getting a H2O. For me, the form factor is perfect.

If you look in the webcache you can see the original page with the price. The Australian retailers Angus & Robertson and Bookworld both had it listed at $179.

The ebook reader

http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/201...00-ppi-screen/

"One thing that jumps out about the description and specs is there is no mention of a microSD card slot or expandable memory. None of the pictures show any of the edges to see if it has a slot or not."

Fozziebear40 04-06-2015 05:56 AM

I was just about to plump for an H2O, think I will wait a few weeks. I wonder if the Glo HD will be waterproof to?

At least we know what the new product is from those rumours in the latest firmware. I might go for the H2O as I know nothing superior is coming soon :)

Presumably the Kobo front-light will be better than the Voyage light, and obviously the UI and more open FW will be superior to the increasingly horribly restrictive Kindle UI and FW. Want bold fonts? People will have to get one of these and not a Voyage. If Kobo can significantly beat the price of the Voyage, then we'll see some action in the market. Probably Amazon will be forced to lower the price of the Voyage.

A little nitpicking here :). Kindle Voyage resolution is 1448 x 1072 according to the online user's guide. So the screens are seemingly identical.

Guess I won't have to wait patiently for Amazon to release Voyage in Canada.

You know the Kobo Glo HD will be better, and cheaper, anyway!

I'm wondering if Amazon will lower the price of the Voyage soon. I'm hoping they do, and give me a credit for the difference. (I'm on the 5-payment plan, so I think that puts me in a special "window"). If they don't want to do that, I may return it....my Voyage has a pin prick. I've been ignoring it, but I do wonder if it will get bigger. I really do like the Voyage, but I feel pretty confident I will like the Glo HD better....so....

oren64 04-06-2015 06:34 PM

In GoodEreader it's whriting "Kobo Glo HD and will be retailing for around $149" it's the same as kobo aura.

http://goodereader.com/blog/electron...ilable-may-1st

mr_nihilism 04-06-2015 09:11 PM

Just some thoughts/observations:

The cover that Kobo is showing off with the Glo HD is really nice. I wonder if it will become available for H2O as well. Also, I prefer the name Glo instead of Aura. And furthermore, I could always use another eReader.

I'm sold.
