And another thing I'd like to have happen is that once an author is nominated and doesn't win, that author cannot be nominated for six months.

I don't either. Ethan Frome was a regular book club read. I enjoyed that one.

I may be mistaken about that. I knew she'd been nominated but wasn't aware she'd never won.

I think that's overly restrictive. Perhaps once a title is nominated and doesn't win it can't be nominated again for a few months. Although monitoring all of the different rules may quickly become a hassle.

But I do like the idea that a lot of the books nominated don't cost anything, or only cost a few dollars. I wouldn't want a situation where I'd be looking at spending AU$15 each month because very new titles where always being selected.

That is already the case. A book that is fully nominated but doesn't win cannot be renominated for 6 months. The one exception is the second chance month. If the book wins it can't be nominated again later.

And there is no rule saying that a given member has to read the actual winner during a given month either. All it means is that the book they are reading is/isn't the book under discussion after the reading time. :)

The Age of Innocence it is. I'm looking forward to it.

crich70 02-06-2015 12:56 AM

Well there is still the 2nd chance month whenever the next one is. :)

The description mentions nothing of any sort of romance.

True, but perhaps the description at Goodreads will make it appear more appropriate to the Romance month:

Quote:

Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, The Age of Innocence is Edith Wharton’s masterful portrait of desire and betrayal during the sumptuous Golden Age of Old New York, a time when society people “dreaded scandal more than disease.”

This is Newland Archer’s world as he prepares to marry the beautiful but conventional May Welland. But when the mysterious Countess Ellen Olenska returns to New York after a disastrous marriage, Archer falls deeply in love with her. Torn between duty and passion, Archer struggles to make a decision that will either courageously define his life—or mercilessly destroy it.

OK - while I didn't vote for it, I do have this book on my "Must read before I die" list.

I don't know how much of a romance it is as I haven't read it, but this is part of the description I got from Amazon:

Quote:

The Age of Innocence is the haunting story of the struggle between love and duty in Gilded Age New York told through the eyes of Newland Archer and his betrothed, May Welland. A young lawyer on the rise, Newland Archer needs only a society wife to solidify his position, but finds himself torn after he meets and falls deeply in love with May’s disgraced cousin, the Countess Olenska.
It was also classified as a romance at Amazon which may or may not mean anything.

Love, marriage, divorce, and a possible triangle..yep sounds like a Romance read to me.

This is also on my TBR, so I really hope to get to it. I filed miserably with last month's selection (Which I do plan to read at some point, as well).

Alsicole 02-06-2015 07:00 AM

I've already downloaded The Age of Innocence, but I also bought Tigers & Devils and I'm really enjoying it. Positively whizzing through it. It reads a bit like good quality chick lit, but with M/M romance. Fun so far.

Thanks to whoever suggested it!

Lin2412 02-10-2015 05:38 AM

I've also bought Tigers & Devils a long time ago per recommendation of my sister (never got around to reading it), but I'd start to do so soon :2thumbsup

Ok, so The Age of Innocence it is. (I also really wanted to reread TFIOS).. Sigh. Too many books, so little time.

And it depends on the parameters of what you mean by 'romance' as well. Books like 'el Cid' at one time were considered romances. The meaning of the term has changed over time.
