Explain your profile name

My name is that of popular anime character, Monkey D Luffy.

I'm sure the origin of your name is less boring. So please, if you want, do share the origin story of your name!:)

Terisa de morgan 12-15-2014 06:55 AM

Research Stephen R. Donaldson ;)

You may be sure, but you're wrong. :)

Paul Durrant.

Well, my name may suggest that I'm a big fan of JRR Tolkien, but that's not actually true (I like Tolkien, but wouldn't have named myself after one of his characters).

When I first started work, I was assigned a mentor - an older, more experienced member of staff to show me the ropes. My mentor's nickname was Gandalf, so, as his protégé, I became Bilbo. 1967 is the year of my birth.

Wish I could be as inconspicuous. My surname has 13 characters and is eccentric even by my culture's standard.

Thank you. I never would have guessed. I too like LoTR but I like One Piece better.

Hamlet53 12-15-2014 08:07 AM

Mine is fairly boring as well. I like Shakespeare's plays. Especially Hamlet as I often share his melancholy and indecisiveness. 1953 was the year I was born.

:D Mordant's need MC One of the first fantasy books I read where the heroine wasn't really a warrior (and heroine, not hero).

Fair enough. Thanks for your post. I'm sorry to say I can't enjoy Shakespeare, in text or theatrical form. But Hamlet of course has the most famous quotes of all time.

crich70 12-15-2014 10:12 AM

Crich70 has an equally mundane origin. My 1st name is Charles and my middle name is Richard. The 70 of course comes from 1970 the yr in which I was born.

library addict 12-15-2014 01:20 PM

I like books.

Years ago I was going to use just library, but that was taken at another (now defunct) message board, so I became library addict.

Ah, now I understand. I've often wondered about the crich part of your name.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm finding these posts quite revealing. If only others would take a cue from you guys and post here...

Mine is because I have a Sony Reader and I love it!

wodin 12-15-2014 01:39 PM

My heritage is half German (actually German speaking Polish) one quarter Norwegian and one quarter various British (Scotts/English). My paternal grandfather was 100% Norwegian and his given name was Odean, obviously a spelling variant of the Norse god Odin. So I took his name, then took the Germanic variant, “Woden”, and began using that.

I soon found that somewhat less than unique so I experimented with various spellings. I soon found that the variant “Wodin” was only in use by a nuts and bolts factory in Ohio, and an artist (in California I think), so I adopted that.

I am sometimes accused of Paganism because of it, and while not necessarily a bad thing, it’s not quite accurate. I actually lean more towards Buddhism, so I’m occasionally led to explain my use of a Pagan god’s name as my nom de plume.

arjaybe 12-15-2014 01:51 PM

You only have to say my Internet name to know what it means. I like simplicity.-)

As can probably also be inferred from my avatar image I'm into bicycling, so my username is a reference to that.

The image was one that I created when I joined MR that combined my two primary reading devices at the time (K3 and iPad2) and a bicycle wheel. A bit cluttered, but it worked, and I tend to associate people on the forums with their avatar more than their username, so I resist changing it with the assumption that there are others like me who lose that association when people change their avatar.

I did try to create a new one when I got a Paperwhite, which is the one shown on my profile page, but it didn't scale well (too little detail), so I didn't use it as my primary avatar.

trichobezoar 12-15-2014 03:03 PM

The origin of my username... I love kitties and have had a few lovely cats throughout the years. My username means...

Spoiler:

Hairball--as in a cat's hairball. Trichobezoar is the scientific word for hairball. http://r12.imgfast.net/users/1211/19...iles/19938.gif

!

To all future posters on this thread, I'll just let you carry on, and won't interfere much. Most of these entries are fascinating, I must admit.

cromag 12-15-2014 05:50 PM

It's my college nickname. I was a Geology major with (really) long hair and a beard, and way too tall to be a Neanderthal.

eschwartz 12-15-2014 06:28 PM

Just Eli Schwartz, I'm afraid. :o

Though if you like, you can think of me as an e-schwartz.

Strether 12-15-2014 06:39 PM

After the main character in Henry James' The Ambassadors.

A variant on Odin's name is also where we get Wednesday from as it translates to "the day of Woden/Odin." In fact most of the days of the week take their names from Norse Gods. Saturday (the day of Saturn), Sunday (the day of the sun) and Monday (the day of the moon) are the exceptions.

latepaul 12-15-2014 07:25 PM

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away there was this thing called AOL. I joined up because I got a free disc with the modem I'd just bought. (There was also an installer from a.n.other ISP but it was harder to navigate and seemed slower).

Day 2[*] on this thing and I discovered "chatrooms". Where I met someone called "LateDrm" and she and I began a friendship that turned in an internet relationship back when such things were considered a bit odd. It lasted for a couple of months I suppose. I kept ending it and then getting back together. There was changing of usernames and searching for each other and other silliness. We'd never exchanged real names or anything.

At a certain point - after it had been over for a little while - I left AOL altogether. It was costing me too much - both in AOL charges and phone charges. I joined a regular ISP this time and figured out how to make it work.

I tried to find a non-AOL version of chatrooms and discovered IRC. I can't remember what username I used at very first but after a while I wistfully wondered if I might somehow find "LateDrm" again. I knew the odds were against it so I decided to use "LateFrnd" (LateDrm's Friend) as a sort of signal to her. I knew it was a bit of a longshot and I suppose it was more that I wanted there to be a chance, even a slim one, rather than it being a realistic strategy.

After a while I changed it to LatePaul because I was sick of getting hit on and wanted to signal my gender. And after that I just got used to it and it became my go-to username.

Sometimes I tell a different version which involves Slartibartfast and Princess Bride but that's usually when I don't want to tell the whole story.

[*]Day 1 was looking for porn - sorry but it's true!

[edit: LateDrm was short for LateDream - nothing to do with Digital Rights Management]

fum 12-16-2014 06:51 AM

I'm glad your name isn't quickpaul. I would have hated to hear that story.
Mine is just my name Flemming Uldall Madsen. And back in the days you only had three chars to write your name on the highscore lists, so I used FUM.

sakura-panda 12-16-2014 09:24 AM

Back in the day, people were discouraged from using (traceable) real names on the internet. My first name is common and my last name is unique, so I didn't want to use either of them as a username.

The first discussion board I signed up with was a (now long gone) anime board. I wanted a name that was unique, but also ridiculous enough that no one else would want it. I can't recall all the different ones I tried but this was the one that didn't get any hits when I searched for it.

(Somehow, these days when you google it, you get a lot of hits that are not me. I guess it wasn't ridiculous enough. Today, the first hit that is me turned up on page 9!)

"Sakura" is both a Japanese cherry blossom and the first name of two of my favorite anime characters (from Cardcaptor Sakura and Sakura Wars.) When I was younger, I collected Giant Pandas -- stuffed animals, figurines, pictures, etc. These days I have a soft spot for Red Pandas too, but back then it was only the Giant Panda.

I prefer it with the hyphen in between, although I will use it as one word if wherever I am registering does not allow it. When the Japanese character "Sakura Panda" became popular, I considered switching my usernames over to "katiecb", but then I lost the consistency I had between communities. Now I'm sometimes "katiecb" and sometimes "sakura-panda", but mostly still sakura-panda. :)

I agree it does have its moments as it spoofs SF and Star Wars in particular.

HomeInMyShoes 12-16-2014 10:08 AM

Home In My Shoes was a song written by a Canadian blues guitarist named Amos Garrett. Well, actually it was "I Make My Home in My Shoes". I adapted the last four words and removed the spaces as my moniker about a decade ago.

I've moved around a lot and I am reasonably upbeat. While the song itself is about the homeless I find the lyrics also speak to me about making my home wherever I end up. So I make wherever I am my home.

Now, get out of my living room. :)

moyogi2 01-14-2015 10:52 PM

Moyogi is a japanese term for a style of bonsai, in English, informal upright. It means a tree shape where the apex or top of the tree is above the base, but the trunk is not straight. I have used it since the days of compuserve and the Well (a bbs).

An ad came on the television for bottled water when I was trying to think of a nickname for this forum.

Actually no. Are you a fan of the movie? I'm asking because I'm one of those who didn't find baf especially good.

I'm assuming you don't burn books after reading them.

Dylrob 01-18-2015 07:06 PM

It's simply a contraction of my first and middle names.

Quexos 01-18-2015 07:28 PM

It's a name from some book.... When I saw it I loved the way it sounds so it stuck with me.
Also I am too lazy to spend hours thinking of a good nickname

SteveEisenberg 01-18-2015 10:45 PM

There are pluses and minuses to my practice of real-name posting.

Unless your posts are always 100 percent apolitical, pseudonyms are a good idea for the young. It's hard to predict what might some day throw off a potential employer. And, who knows, some day you might want to run for elected office. No need to make oppo researchers's jobs easy!

One reason someone might post with a pen name -- privacy -- is not a big concern of mine. I used to post on a board that required real names (even if not totally enforced), and did the same here.

Hypothetically, real name posting improves civility, but I admit this to be dubious:

http://techcrunch.com/2012/07/29/sur...rove-comments/

One slight reason I real-name post is that if someone was considering use of the software in my tag line, it may make them more confident it isn't malware.

Would you like to write a program/plugin/whatever to look at the contents of a Kindle and remove the extra files left behind when an eBook is deleted?

Melon Soda 01-19-2015 12:53 AM

All the names I wanted or usually use on forums are already used... Melon Soda is one of my favorite drinks and it was also one of the nicknames I used elsewhere. It happened that it wasn't in use in this forum when I signed up so I just went with it! :)

That's a great idea that does fit into my skill-set. Plus it also fits with the theme of KinCleaner. I will be looking into it.

eschwartz 01-22-2015 07:02 PM

Something like

Code:

for d in /mnt/us/*.sdr; do
    book = $(basename d .sdr)
    if [[ ! -f  /mnt/us/${book}.azw* -o ! -f /mnt/us/${book}.mobi ]]; then
        rm -r $d
    fi
done

;) ;)

There is already a KUAL extension that removes the EndActions, which I extended to rm Personal\ Letter* as well, and this would be fairly easy to do as well... It does of course run on the Kindle itself, but it could just as easily be implemented on the computer, with the heuristic KindleDrive sensing I assume you already do, in any programming language, with the greatest ease.

But this shouldn't be done automatically... the leftovers can be helpful if you re-sideload the book, since sideloaded books do not store annotations on Amazon's servers. That is why sideloaded books specifically leave those remains behind, just in case.

They aren't all that bothersome, considering that the combined filesize is negligible and it doesn't show up in the framework -- unlike the Personal Letters.
