Perhaps. I probably just need to finish watching season five of Walking Dead and finish the basement renovations then I can regain an hour or two a night of reading time. :chinscratch:

I usually have a lull in December as well and I did finish all of my challenges. I've got lots of possibilities for reads that are plenty entertaining: Pratchett, Holt, Fforde. Just need to reorganize my time

Well, I beat my updated goal for the year early... anything I read from here on out is gravy.

... okay, most of my reading is gravy, but nonetheless. At any rate, I've hit my second lull for the year as well; have to find something new and interesting that I can't put down.

HomeInMyShoes 11-26-2015 01:01 PM

^I like to think of it as recharge time for next year.

pdurrant 11-26-2015 01:03 PM

I'm doing well in my reading. It's my buying I have trouble with.

Aarrgh - I'm over budget again. But it's nearly December. I'll be entering December wit just over £24 left in my budget, so I have a good chance of being under budget for the year, unless some amazing bargains come in the Black Friday/Christmas sales.

I've finished all of my sub-challenges, but I'm really hoping I can finish the year having made some downwards progress on my TBR. Without cheating and reading a load of standalone short stories. I had slipped to -8 earlier this month*, but have clawed my way back to -3, with another two books imminent. It's just a question of how well I can keep a lid on the acquisitions.

*My progress is negative. -8 actually means I have 8 more books than I started with. I prefer to count that as a negative, for some reason.

Congratulations! Alas, I've slipped to -31.

A little only slightly creative accounting and I'm essentially on track for my sub-goals. I wish I had made some better (read: more difficult) choices along the way, but that's why it's a challenge. If my reach didn't exceed my grasp at least a bit, I wouldn't be trying hard enough. I'll see what I can do about upping my numbers before year-end, but this year, the holiday crunch seems to have started even earlier than usual. I've had very little reading time lately.

One of next year's challenges will be a stringent goal in regard to my real, not virtual, TBR. The stacks of unread books are putting me into Collyer brother territory (non-Yanks and the kids can Google). In fact, and no small thanks to this thread, I seem to have the ebook problem licked. Knock wood. As evidence, I'll offer that I keep a master list outside Calibre of just where I've bought my epubs, and when I recently had the thought that I hadn't been maintaining it, I had to go back months in Calibre before I found my last purchase-but-one from anyplace but Amazon with Prime no-rush shipping credit. (I had a recent purchase, The Big Book of Christmas Mysteries, but that was it in yonks.)

TL;DR: I'm right there with you, with the life-crushing aspect added in.

I've managed to keep mine at -7, but I'd really like to get it into the plus territory.

Overall, doing OK on my goals, but not great. But I've got a couple of shortish books to read now, after too many really long ones, so that will help. And I'm (mostly) managing to keep track of what I've bought and for how much. THAT is a big improvement. Still not as timely as I might wish for, but getting better.

When Discounts Attack!

I had just finished a book, this morning, bringing me to -2, and I see that three items on my kindle wishlist are significantly discounted, one of which is actually an omnibus, and here I am back at -7 in the blink of an eye. It takes a lot less time to buy books than it does to read them.

The 2016 Reading Challenge List Thread and Discussion Thread are now available!

As usual, make one post in the list thread and edit it to update it with your progress throughout 2016. General discussion about progress, challenges, what to choose as a challenge, etc., should go in the discussion thread.

Have fun!

HomeInMyShoes 12-01-2015 01:52 PM

Woohoo! I like to start plotting early.

Just trying to squeeze out 20,000 pages now for 2015. Less than 800 pages to go now.

That would make four years in a row of 20,000 pages. I never thought I could read that much.

issybird 12-04-2015 06:51 PM

I took stock today and I'm four books in three categories behind in reaching my 2015 goals. It's not surprising; I had very little reading time in November. So I need to get cracking, but it's doable. Luckily, I'm allowed to double count, so it will be three books total that I have to make sure I get to in time.

Tarana 12-09-2015 01:14 AM

I'm barely going to make my 100 book reading goal, but considering the issues, I did pretty well, I think. I'm very behind on magazines and unless I start catching up with them, I will let my subscriptions expire next year.

I certainly will have a 'count' goal for next year, and focus a little more on strangling my book/audiobook buying addiction.

On the plus side, I've managed to read some authors I've long wanted to read (or listen to), so that was successful. For some authors though, I have dropped them from my wishlist because their writing has simply not shown itself to continue to shine.
