Book description gone from menu?
 

With this latest software upgrade, "book description" seems to be gone? The option that takes me to the amazon description of the book, to remind me why I picked it up, and to let me see the current review rating. (If the rating is low, maybe I won't bother reading it.) Now that option seems to be replaced by a useless "about this book" link, which has nothing in it for some books, something that tries to go to Goodreads, which is useless if the book isn't rated there.

I don't think you're having a "senior moment." Both my Kindle Touch and K4 still have the Book Description link and they still work as you describe. I like that link also. I hope it doesn't go away (for me) and it does come back (for you).

My new K Voyage started with the book description link, then had a software update and lost it. Sob!

While reading a book, open the menu. There is (was) an option "book description" which took you to the amazon page for the book. It prompted you to open the wifi, and then showed the regular amazon page. You could read the description which had caused you to get the book, and you could also see what the current star rating was, and read user comments. If people had piled up more "this is awful" ratings, then maybe I'd stop earlier. If there is a preponderance of "this is great" ratings" I might press on longer.

Any kindle without a software upgrade in the last few weeks should have it. I know my K4 had it. And the KV had it till the upgrade.

Thanks. Even though I buy most of my books from Amazon, all my content is sideloaded with Calibre. I wonder if the link perhaps wasn't there for sideloaded content?

"Book Description" is still available, BTW, on the pop-up window you get if you press and hold a book on the home page.

I doubt that it would be. (Is the link YOU mentioned there for side loads? ) You could download a sample straight to your kindle (without Calibre) to see if your software version still has my link. But I'm OK now that you've found one option for me. :D

The other cure for fuzzy brain is to go get the K4 and see if I'm remembering wrongly. Nope, it really WAS in the menu from inside the book one was reading. It was also in the "right arrow on book title on index page" which is the equivalent of "long press". I never noticed it there!

And I've only had the KV for about a month, but I had to really think, to remember how to choose a book on the K4's index page! Wow. How quickly those arrow keys seem ancient. Or maybe this new med really is killing brain cells.

If the book has an ASIN (exth 113 field) the book description link will pop up. In both places on my Kindle Touch, but I guess fw5.6.1 removed it in the book?

Anyway, it is dependent on the ASIN, and FWIW I have some converted books, some of which I made sure to embed a fake ASIN to get rid of the "personal" tag -- those also show the book description link (because the framework just knows to make a link to whatever shows up, it doesn't have validation built in), but it is a dead link, ;) so you end up on the storefront.

The legacy sideloaded books that were converted before I set that up still show the PDOC tag and have no book description link.

The originally-from-Amazon sideloaded books that are DeDRMed and title-sanitized have not been converted and have a working Book Description link -- even though they were sideloaded via USB.
