Hubba hubba.

I've read the description and the title is rather racist. It's also stereotyping people. Sorry, but this one has to go (IMHO).

Are you kidding me? Ever heard "don't judge a book by its cover"? Same goes for a book's title.

This is a highly acclaimed book written by a Haitian Canadian journalist.

Grow up!

I'll second How to Make Love To a Negro Without Getting Tired.

Also second Le Grand Meaulnes and third As Red As Blood.

I understand Jon's concerns about Dany Laferriere's book, but while I do think the author is playing off people's stereotypes in his choice of a title, I would be greatly surprised and dismayed if the book was at all racist in tone. I view the title as purely tongue-in-cheek. This isn't to say it hasn't caused controversy. When the film version was released in 1989, not only did several major newspapers refuse to publish ads for the film, but the NAACP boycotted it. My own suspicion is that they were all being over-sensitive in this case and that the hullabaloo surrounding the book and the film was a knee-jerk reaction to a title that was intended as a jest on an existing stereotype rather than a reinforcement of the stereotype itself, but the only way to know for certain is to read the book.

It's still a racist title no matter the book's content. Highly acclaimed in most cases means it's rubbish. A lot of award winning or highly acclaimed books aren't worth the praise.

Possibly, but they're very unlikely to be racist.

I have no problem with anyone reading the book and pointing out where they feel racism may have surfaced. In fact that's plays a big role in my interest in the book. But, to read the title and act as censor for us all informing us that this one needs to go; come on. Particularly in light of these comments I think it may generate some great discussion.

Oh yes. . . . and I almost forgot. I'll second As Red as Blood.

And society often is the one that decides if a book is or isn't racist. Many who ban Tom Sawyer today do so because of some of its language, but at the time when Mark Twain wrote it society was a lot different than it is now.

I'll third Le Grand Meaulnes

Last day to make any nominations or second/thirds.

Although I think we have a good selection as it is.

WT Sharpe 11-01-2014 01:13 AM

Nominations are closed and the poll has been posted. We only have 7 fully nominated this time, but there are some might good choices there.
