What is a Caliber?

What does the caliber have to do with the bullet or the gun? Does a larger caliber mean it will have larger power or wat? Im really confused on this matter

If you want to learn more about calibre's history, click here. From that link, authored by Kovid:

The name calibre was chosen by my wife, Krittika. The libre in calibre stands for freedom, indicating that calibre is a free and open source product, modifiable by all. Nonetheless, calibre should be pronounced as cali-ber, not ca-libre.

Calibre is the size of the bullet that it shoots.

But the SOFTWARE is something else ;)

It's also

the quality of someone's character or the level of someone's ability
And the program does have a high level of ability in its job of converting and sorting out ebook files. :D

Caliber or calibre (the English spelling) is the inside diameter or bore of a gun, and originally referred to the diameter in inches. So .45-caliber is forty-five one hundredths of an inch.

Since weapons now are generally denominated in millimeters, you will also see the usage 7.7mm caliber, though technically I think that is wrong.

Since the bullet or projectile is necessarily the same diameter as the bore of the gun, the usage is interchangeable.

When the caliber is more than an half an inch, the term is usually abandoned and only inches or millimeters are used instead.

But I suspect that the intention in naming the software was in reference to its caliber as an admirable quality.

Actually it's because the dev's wife suggested it ;)

I knew that pronunciation thing... and despite that I've been thinking of the program as "ca libra" all this time. I make no promises of impending change. ;)

Someone should also point out that the "libre" ending of "Calibre" has a double meaning. It means free (as in freedom) but it also shares the same root as the word library.

So Calibre is a quality (calibre) free (libre) library (libre) program.
