preferences option
 

I just installed Calibre 1.36.0. The toolbar does not show a preferences button.
I need that option to install plugins.My platform is OSX 10.8.5, used browser Chrome (updated).Please help me out.

ctrl-P is the alternate (and a way you can get there to restore any hidden icons)

Often the Preferences icon is not visible because the calibre window is not wide enough to accommodate all the enabled icons in the main toolbar. You can select which icons are visible (and in what order) by following theduck's advice.

Tip: move Preferences to the top (first) of the main toolbar(s)

Or put it on the MENU bar. Mine has just Preferences and Help

Thanks everybody . Problem solved.
Incidentally,on a Mac the magic is to press combi CMD+ P to unveil the preference button

FYI for others dropping by this thread, you can always get to Preferences via the GUI and your mouse by following Griker's advice above if you don't see the icon. Preferences is the one item that Kovid has made it impossible to remove in such a way that it is not accessible via the mouse.
