Jones, Susan Morrow, 1864?-1926: Alternate names: S. Carleton Jones, S. Carleton, S. Carlton, Guy Carleton. Born into the prominent Stairs family, Susan Morrow (1865-1926) grew up in a stately family home along the banks of the Northwest Arm in Halifax, where she received her education. In 1899 she married her cousin and childhood neighbour, physician Colonel Guy Carleton Jones (1864-1950), whose career included posts as assistant quarantine officer in Halifax, principal medical officer for the Maritime provinces, and Director-General for the Canadian Medical service. He also served in the Boer War and World War I. Susan's writing career was varied and remains difficult to trace due to her use of several pseudonyms and to the historical fusion of Susan with her sister Helen Morrow Paske Duffus*, who used the pseudonym "Helen Milecete." They co-authored THE CAREER OF MRS. OSBORNE which appeared in SMART SET in 1901 (by S. Carleton and Helen Milecete), and later in book form under the name "Carleton-Milecete." Susan's cousins and sisters-in-law, Alice Jones* and Frances Jones Bannerman* were also writers. Under the name "S. Carleton" she wrote magazine fiction such as the gothic story "The Lame Priest", which appeared in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY in 1901, and in 1903 she won $200.00 from the NEW YORK HERALD for her short story, "The Corduroy Road."
