Stanley, Henry M.: Autobiography of Henry M. Stanley.v1.15 Nov 2013
1 Attachment(s)
This is the biography/autobiography of the African explorer, Henry Stanley.
The first half of the book is an autobiography, while the second is a biography consisting of Stanley's writings as selected by his wife. His life is a story of one starting with stark poverty in a workhouse in Victorian England, sailing to America, living in New Orleans and fighting in the U. S. Civil War. After the civil war, he took up reporting for which he showed great aptitude and in some ways, blazed the trail for star reporters followed by Winston Churchil. His newspaper sent him to find the missionary David Livingston, who was reported to have died. He not only found him, but assisted him in his exploration of uncharted Africa. After Livingston's death, he completed with work on exploration started by Livingston. This book because of its age is in the public domain everywhere. I hope to find another source for the pictures which are overly dark. |
