advanced font settings ignored in one book - embedded font?

I have a Kobo Mini and copied a few epub via calibre onto it. All free books.
In one book I can set the weight and sharpness of Georgia (kobo original). In another book the advanced settings are being ignored.

Can you tell me why the settings are not used?
Furthermore it seems the font is not used. Is this due to an embedded font? Is the embedded font always used or the user settings?

The advanced settings only apply to the fonts supplied with the e-reader.
They don't work on side-loaded fonts or embedded fonts.

Embedded fonts are only used correctly when 'Document Default' is
chosen in the fonts menu

Actually you can make sideloaded fonts amenable to the advanced settings by using Metazoa's patch (but all four variations of each font - bold, italic, bolditalic, normal- must have been sidealoaded).

Thats the problem: Georgia is a font supplied with the reader but the advanced settings are still not applied. I tried other original kobo fonts too but no advanced things :(

If you're not averse to a bit of epub surgery, you could try unzipping this epub (needs to be non-DRM) and opening the internal css file. Look for occurrences of font-family:something-or-other and delete them, or report back here what you see.
