Available at libraries everywhere!

* Yes, I know it was part of the literary club. :)

It was also fully nominated for February 2013 but that was more than 6 months ago, so should be ok.

I'm giving a third to Flowers for Algernon, but wonder, where/when it was banned.

Challenged/Banned Info:
Flowers for Algernon

Banned in Emporium, PA, due to sexually explicit passages that parents feared would awaken their children’s “natural impulses.” 1977

Challenged in Oberlin, OH, due to sexually explicit passages. 1984

Banned in Glen Rose, AR, due to language and sexually explicit passages. Objectors compared Flowers for Algernon to “books in plastic covers you see at newsstands.” 1981

Challenged in Glenrock, WY for sexually explicit passages and language. Objector compared the novel to Playboy and Hustler among other, um, photo-centric publications. 1984

Challenged in Plant City, FL, (and Arizona, Virginia, and Georgia) for sexually explicit passages, adult themes, and profanity. 1976, 1981, 1996, 1997

Banned from Aledo (Texas) Middle School, subsequently re-shelved at the school library, but not reinstated into the curriculum. (1999)
Frequently challenged due to objections to “sexually explicit” content.

Ranks no. 47 on ALA’s 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000.

I'd like to nominate The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, purely for selfish reasons since I keep putting off reading it and the bookclub would give me incentive. It won the Pulitzer and is 3rd on the ALA's list of banned and challenged classics. Should be available as an ebook at all the stores and can be found on Overdrive.

John F 08-24-2013 06:33 AM

I'll second The Grapes of Wrath.

drofgnal 08-24-2013 06:48 AM

I third the Grapes of Wrath

I think that's our ten now isn't it?

Great list.

Do you know something I don't? (It wouldn't be the first time!)

WT Sharpe 08-24-2013 09:36 AM

Flowers for Algernon is fully nominated.

Fade is not fully nominated.

I seem to have given Billi's vote for Flowers for Algernon to Fade. I'm correcting that now.

Synamon 08-24-2013 11:19 AM

I'll third Fade, that should get us to 10.

WT Sharpe 08-24-2013 02:47 PM

That it does. Next comes the poll.

WT Sharpe 08-24-2013 02:53 PM

The nominations are now closed.
