‘The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective.’
The last part of the 19th century was the age when the private detective came into prominence as a new character in fiction. And lady detectives arrived shortly afterwards. Miss Brooke is a very competent lady sleuth. I first came across Loveday Brooke when BBC Radio 4 dramatised some of the stories a couple of years ago. Then I found these on the ‘Celebration of Women Writers’ website and thought that other people might also like them. These stories were first published in The Ludgate Monthly, London, February-July 1893, with the exception of “Missing”, which was first published in book form as part of The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective, London: Hutchinson & Co., 1894. Contents: The Black Bag Left on a Door-Step The Murder at Troyte’s Hill The Redhill Sisterhood A Princess’s Vengeance Drawn Daggers The Ghost of Fountain Lane Missing! |
