Prince Americo is in London to prepare for his marriage to Maggie Verver, daughter of a wealthy American financier. The Prince meets an inpoverished friend of Maggie's, Charlotte Stant, with whom he once had an affair, unbeknownst to Maggie, and who has come for the wedding. After the wedding, Maggie is afraid her father has become lonely and convinces him to marry Charlotte. The novel then focuses on the relationships between the four characters.

I've added accents and italics, and in one chapter, added a couple of paragraphs that were left out of the source document.
