What is QC?

I just ordered this model, only because it's the cheapest, not having an ebook reader before. After I ordered it, i didn't realize it wasn't a touch screen. Coming from an iPad mini, hopefully I can figure it out.*~*Amy*~*

QC = Quality Control. (It's a bit better made is the implication)

(don't listen "little silver k4" she doesn't know how beautiful you are...) hehehe

Quality Control. It means there is a better chance at getting a unit that has no defects or blemishes and good contrast. I strongly recommend for a touch reader the Kindle Paperwhite. It's awesome! The only Kindle I now use.

MANY THANKS to jswinden, for this manual. I have a touch screen on on iPad, so when I ordered this model, I had no idea it wasn't a touch screen. I will used the 30 days to see if I like it, but $40 extra for the Paperwhite and front light might be worth it, if I can drop Netflix and go back to reading before VCR's & DVRs become available.

I found out this model doesn't have the front light. Is the Paperwhite bigger? Now I have to figure out if I will use it enough to justify the increase in price.

Are you an avid reader?

I used to be before the advent of the VCR/DVR and Netflix. We don't have cable.

twobob 04-06-2013 10:23 PM

about 5 mm taller.? maybe?

maybe a few mm thicker. unnoticeable (black is very slimming)

almost identical in size.

It's heavier and little bit bigger but not by much. It feels solid and I like that. The Paperwhite is front lit comes with a much nicer interface with book covers! You can have custom fonts on it which makes it perfect for me. The difference in screen is like night and day. The Paperwhite screen is so much nicer. It has a higher resolution than the K4.

I read about 110 books a year since I got my Kindle. Reading is pretty much all I do. I don't watch TV though we also have Netflix and channels like that on Roku. We ditched cable last year.

I hate retuning things, but I am going to send it back. Which cover did you buy? What did you you do with your K4?

I bought the official cover in black and I love it. It feels like holding a book and has a auto on/off feature.

I have two K4s and a K3 just lying around collecting dust. I can't use them because the screen looks dirty and the text ugly now I'm use to a higher resolution and cleaner background.

I love my Paperwhite! :D

Not quite sure if this is a shortcut or not, but if you hold the keyboard button and press the left previous page button twice, a screen displays showing a barcode and your serial number. Works from most screens.
Also is typing 'is' into Search my items considered a short cut. That gives you the time and date. Also, what about @help and so on.

Glorfindel 03-21-2014 07:13 PM

pushing the power button 5 times restarts my K4 some times... not sure what exacaly it does though as the screen shows a message saying that it's doing something (doesn't say what if I remmember right) and then restarts...

Math on your Kindle:
From the homescreen, you can do various math operations. Note: Kindle does experience floating decimal errors sometimes.
Press the Keyboard button top open up the search box and type an equation like so:
Code:

1+1
And press Enter. This will display:
Code:

1+1=2
as the first search result, as well the other search results under it.
More complex equations are available as well:
Code:

(5+4+3+5)/4=4.25
Code:

3^7=2187
I don't have a floating point decimal error example on hand wight now.

Doing things like:
Code:

7>6=76
Code:

23|60=2360
so it's not the best, but it works for a quick calculator!

THIS MEANS DON'T BUY A CALCULATOR APPLICATION FOR YOUR KINDLE!

Glorfindel 03-31-2014 12:49 PM

opens Kstore if I remmember right

Well that is really cool! I already bought one but its fine that I did cuz it has the trig and calculus functions that I need (and costed 99¢) :) but this would be easier to use I'm sure.

And how to change the screen brightness?

Glorfindel 04-05-2014 04:58 PM

You can't change the "screen brightness" on a K4. It doesn't have a light to change the brightness of.

Is there a method in the way this Kindle decides to default to full definition or highlight when making a selection? I thought it would be the last method used, but it seems to be random? Is there a way to have it default, to say, highlight? Cheers

Glorfindel 05-07-2014 07:37 PM

If the word is in the dictionary then it will show the def. if it isn't then it won't.

Glorfindel 09-12-2014 05:31 PM

Search bar calculator has a 'history function', kinda. If you include an _ it wil replace it with the answer to the previous calculation.

Really? Great.

yep

Searching for 'is' and selecting the top result displays detailed time and date information.

Battery replacement

Hi everyone
It looks like I need to replace the battery in my precious K4 NT. The question is: will I lose all the books that are already there? Should I back up these books before replacing the battery?

It is always good to backup, but changing the battery should not harm the books because they are in the same flash memory as the operating system.

nurusz 09-20-2019 05:19 AM

Thanks, good to know that 😀

My Kindle 4 NTs (I have multiple NT4 readers) just downloaded operating system version 4.1.4 from 4.1.3 when I charged them up and enabled wifi. I installed the update. Any members know what the update changes? Not obvious to me and the update does not include any info on changes or enhancements. Be nice if Amazon included info even if the update is just bug fixes.

NiLuJe 02-01-2020 07:14 PM

HTTPS shenanigans, IIRC.

dfusc 05-06-2020 02:37 AM

Hello everyone, i have a kindle 4 NT (2012 edition), can you give some tips and advice about how to remove the dirt stuck on the back panel in a safe way.
Here's a photo of my device: https://imgur.com/a/SSCCcbA

NiLuJe 05-06-2020 12:24 PM

Isopropyl alcohol has been my go to for quite a while, and I can vouch for it on a K4. Might be tricky to get ahold of, depending on your location. Pharmacies should be able to get it, but may not be allowed to sell it to you ;).

The dirt is very stuck, so i think a simple cloth will not work. When i run my fingernail softly over the surface, the dirt comes off.
What can i use with the alcohol to remove it?

NiLuJe 05-06-2020 04:42 PM

Microfiber cloth is usually a good bet. You can possibly start with simple cotton pads to get the worst of it off, first.

Note that I do insist on pure (>90%) *isopropyl* alcohol: it doesn't leave any trace, and it evaporates quickly. (Speaking of, fumes are not great for you, use in a ventilated area).

Maybe a Q-tip? (bit of cotton on the end of a stick)

What about adding enough distilled water to make it 50%?

I don't have a citation, but I thought that alcohol + water make a better solvent than either alone.

I guess it would dry slower, but thin film will dry reasonably quickly and you shouldn't leave much to dry or it will leave behind a bit of whatever you cleaned off that is soluble.

NiLuJe 05-06-2020 08:04 PM

@j.p.s: It's better for *medical* usage (e.g., rubbing alcohol). Here, you want to avoid residues when it evaporates, so if you were to try that, I'd recommend doing it with distilled water.

The tag is gone on mine, but it's medical grade, so I'm pretty sure it's like 99%, and I've never mixed it with anything myself. But, yeah, it can be, that's often the case with water and/or ethanol in stuff like glass/screen/windshield cleaning fluids.

As it can be one of the main ingredient in hand sanitizer, getting ahold of some might be especially tricky in the current context ;).

I think not for a Q-Tip as it looks like more pressure may be needed to get the dirt off then you can get with a Q-Tip.
