There used to be a built-in minesweeper game on some Kindles, not active content. But, I think you had to use Alt-M or something to get it to show up. That won't work with the on-screen keyboard.

Thanks for the hint. First I thought it is a joke. It works. (I'm new with Kindle).

Have posted another thread related to parts of this one (sorry!) but not yet received any satisfactory replies ... maybe you guys can help.
I view large jpg diagrams (approx 1000 x 1000 pixels) on my K3 using picture viewer and view them at full size and scroll across them to see all of the diagram.
Is this possible on the K4 ? ie can you see full sized jpgs or are they resized to fit the screen ? Presumably the 4 way scroll will work to scroll across if they display at full size but zoom etc on the K4 will not be possible.
Thanx for your help on this - dont want to get a K4 if it cant do whet I want - will stick with the K3

As I mentioned in my PM to you, placing a jpeg in the pictures folder will do no good as there is no Alt button and thus no way to invoke the Alt + Z command which scans the pictures folder.

Hi,
I just brought this Kindle and was wondering if you can advise me on how to view PNG files. Jpg files works by just zipping it and placing it in the "picture" folder but for some reason PNG files don't show up. I've tried creating a sub-folder named "screensaver" and placing the PNG files in that folder, I see the name of the file but when I tried to open it, I get an error that states "Archieve does not contain any pictures."

Kindly assist.

Thank you so much

sheffieldsteve 11-13-2011 07:02 PM

have you tried putting a .png in a zipped folder in the Kindle 'documents' folder ?

If viewing .PNG's doesn't work, you could also convert the PNG to JPG.
I use a handy tool called Irfanview (irfanview.com) for this.

Book covers display

A hack to have the book covers displayed on one page would be nice.
Just like the ibook shelves on the iphone.

You're best bet is to ask in the Developer's forum. That's where those who hack their Kindles posts.

stormdraincat 01-17-2012 06:31 PM

Thanks, i appreciate it

ixtab 02-17-2012 01:25 AM

The link to the developers forum is two posts above yours.

Is there a jailbreak for the kindle 4.01 yet? I'd like to put some custom screen savers on it.

Yes. It is built-in. ENABLE_DIAGS. Enable USBnet. SSH. Put what you want where you want. If you want kindlets from the developer's corner, put the jailbreak key on it. Whatever. Read the threads and the wiki. For that matter, read the posts on this page of this thread, just above your post. I mean, really now, are you just trolling, or what? :(

Thank's very much for these tips that I've downloaded !

Although we all miss the lovely minesweeper easter egg, amazon was feeling nice and added an active content version!

:thanks: amazon!

Not for UK Residents it isn't :(

Suggestion

You've got a nice little guide. Not sure if it's getting added to anymore, but how about putting a link to the file Kindle-Tips-for-K4-NT-1st-Edition.mobi in the beginning of the book?

Kind of like the The Magic Catalog of Project Gutenberg E-Books or Mobile Reads very own Mobipocket Download Guide. You could easily download the latest K4 Tips.

Cheers!

jT

You could just subsribe to this thread and you know when it gets updated instead of trying to download the book again in the hope it got updated. Except that link would always refer to the 1st edition as it is part of the file name, not?

nurusz 01-21-2013 09:05 AM

Hello
I would like to ask if there is any way to force the "Search This book" option to ignore the capital letters ?
By now "Book" is not the same as "book" :(

HarryT 01-21-2013 09:07 AM

No. The Kindle's search mechanism is not case-sensitive.

nurusz 01-21-2013 05:39 PM

Thank you
Something wrong with these people of Amazon !

Noughty 01-23-2013 06:17 AM

I'd like to have search just for titles and authors. It makes no sense to look through all the books content to find a book. It takes ages since I keep almost all my library in kindle so I can read any book I want without needing to transfer it.

No ideas how to manage that?

Or how to search for an exact word and not every similar word too which gives massive results again which is not useful at all.

Kindle search is good if you want massive amount of results instead of the few results you were actually looking for. I look for a specific title and it sometimes gives almost all my books in results since they all have that word somewhere in the content. So it takes minutes to get results, at least hits in title/ author are first in the list or it would be completely impossible to find a book even if you know both author and title. You can only hope the title has very rare word, then results are given pretty quick.

Anyone mastered the kindle search and can share the tips and secrets? Or where are none?

Which one is the Kindle 4 nt? I can't figure it out from the Amazon page. I would never buy an eBook reader that has a touch screen, but I wouldn't mind having a next generation from my 3 that is nt.

It's the Kindle that is $69 dollars. There is a Silver and Black version. The Black has better QC.

twobob 03-23-2013 09:49 PM

Is there a shortcut for screen rotation?

Does anyone know of a shortcut for screen rotation on the Kindle 4 NT?

My display has a line about 1 inch long from pressure damage which obstructs the first three lines of each page. Being able to rotate quickly will prevent me from having to buy a new one. :(

I've just jailbroken it and am searching for a hack to rotate with the directional buttons, but that search is a bit daunting.

Thanks in advance... my first post.

twobob 03-26-2013 11:52 AM

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...2&postcount=31

Might be helpful... ;)

It autoscrolls the page "Down a bit" when the page is turned...

For your use case you would amend /mnt/us/extensions/scoller/bin/autoscroller to read

PHP Code:

#!/bin/sh
SSSTATE=`lipc-get-prop com.lab126.powerd preventScreenSaver`
lipc-set-prop com.lab126.powerd preventScreenSaver 0

# OKAY WE ARE CHANGING THIS BIT BELOW HERE
/mnt/us/extensions/scroller/bin/runner.sh 10 1 1 &
# 10 is 10% down ,  1 is full flash refresh, 1 is Move DOWN
# you can play with less or more %age depending on the size of the damage

dbus-monitor "interface='com.lab126.powerd',member='goingToScreenSaver'" --systemkillall -9 runner.shlipc-set-prop com.lab126.powerd preventScreenSaver "$SSSTATE"; ) &
usleep 30000
killall
-INT dbus-monitor

Requires KUAL

if you would prefer a way to just trigger rotation I can probably make that too...
let me know. ta.

EDIT: I was thinking about HOW you were going to use the rotation...
Would you prefer the scrolling to just UNTRIGGER after say 2 seconds or something?
we could probably do that as well.

More info = better answers :)

Thanks for being so helpful!

It would be amazing to JUST have a way to trigger rotation. Over-riding the physical buttons would be a perfect solution.

Do you think it is possible to re-map the page forward and back buttons? This would be my ideal setup:

(Button:New Function)
Right Previous Page: Rotate clockwise
Right Next Page: Next Page
Left Previous Page: Rotate counter-clockwise
Left Next Page: Previous Page

Another good one would be to change the chapter skip function on the 5-Way controller to rotate instead, but it would suck if it overrides the ability to scroll through words for the dictionary when I bring the cursor onto the page.

twobob 03-29-2013 12:42 PM

I had a bit of a look at that.

Maybe. I'm still undecided.

"probably" is the answer...

The "4" is the big hang-up... shame you cant just use my new voice activated gui ;)

Try the KUAL trick. I added notes for you on the thread.

Cheers.

You cant have it both ways... The buttons either do their job or they dont...
Perhaps I could figure out a MUTLI-PRESS solution at some point.. but I fear there would be too many "accidental other clicks" which might be annoying.

It's on the pile to look at. but as a solution that should work has been presented I have to say it's now near the bottom. If you don't mind.
