Here's another novel by the American novelist Frank Norris, who died way too early. The book was published in 1914, shortly after Norris's death.

"The overriding theme in Norris' fiction is the impact of industrialization on peaceful agricultural communities and the consequent chaos in the lives of people who lived in these communities."

"A promising young man becomes hooked on alcohol, sex, and gambling and gradually descends into his own living hell....The plot and writing is full of a bleak, black humor and rich in irony; it seemed almost to hint of the future work of Kafka.
