Norris, Frank: Vandover and the Brute. v1. 08 Aug. 07

Here's another novel by the American novelist Frank Norris, who died way too early. The book was published in 1914, shortly after Norris's death.
Here's a quote about the book: "The overriding theme in Norris' fiction is the impact of industrialization on peaceful agricultural communities and the consequent chaos in the lives of people who lived in these communities." And another quote, from a different source: "A promising young man becomes hooked on alcohol, sex, and gambling and gradually descends into his own living hell....The plot and writing is full of a bleak, black humor and rich in irony; it seemed almost to hint of the future work of Kafka. To me, it is a novel by an extremely talented, young (25) writer who doesn't have much to tell us but a story of progressive degradation since he is simply talented, not wise." I hope you enjoy it.
