Harry, you are the Awesome!!! I don't care how old this thread is...Thank You!!

Ziguezon 06-17-2011 11:48 PM

Yes, thank you Mr T. This was the first book I loaded and read on my ebook reader when I first got it a few years ago.

Actually, It's still loaded on there, as I haven't finished reading all the stories yet :o

HarryT 06-18-2011 05:13 AM

I would add a cautionary note that this omnibus edition is NOT in the public domain in the United States, since it contains "The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes", which is still under US copyright. You should not, therefore, download it if you are in the US.

ahobilam123 06-18-2011 09:13 AM

thanks

Ryvyan 06-25-2011 07:48 AM

Thanks for uploading the books, would be nice to go through them all at once!

charlie53 06-26-2011 06:42 AM

Thank you so much for this :thanks: I've been trying to find a complete collection for a while now and nearly all of them are either incomplete or full of errors.

purple_fishy 06-26-2011 03:29 PM

I was SOOOO excited to find this. This is going on my ereader asap. :)

HarryT 11-20-2011 07:54 AM

Major edit and re-arrangement of the book. All books within the omnibus are now presented in chronological order and, within the short story collections, the stories in "His Last Bow" and "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes" have been re-arranged into publication order. Many illustrations have been re-scanned, and several missing ones added. "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" has been restored from "His Last Bow" to its rightful place in "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" (it was omitted from the first English edition because it was felt to be too shocking at the time of original publication). At the same time, the introduction to "The Cardboard Box" which had been (badly) appended to the start of "The Resident Patient" has been removed, and the original Strand Magazine introduction restored. Many hundreds of errors have been corrected, and italics, missing accents, etc, restored. The formatting has been significantly improved (eg letters, newspaper quotes, etc, are now indented and in a smaller font). The result of all this is an immensely improved and much more error-free book.

HarryT 11-21-2011 11:50 AM

A number of people reported typos in the previous upload, so I thought I'd better get them corrected immediately. I've also replaced the cover by one that's consistent with the cover style that I usually use. Uploaded v10.

DeGodefroi 11-25-2011 05:25 PM

awesome!

JDK1962 11-25-2011 09:30 PM

Thanks so much for this. I've had my beloved Doubleday edition for 30+ years now, and it's so nice to have it available for the Kindle. Especially in an edition that's been gone over by someone who actually cares about getting the content right.

HarryT 12-17-2011 05:51 AM

A number of MR users have reported small errors, about a dozen in total. Fixed these, and created a new version. Many thanks for these error reports - please do let me know if you find any remaining errors; I'm sure there must still be some!

Yesssssssssssssssssssssss
Thank you!!!
*hugs*

First of all, kudos to the 10th power for the best, most-readable, easiest-to-navigate, single-volume Holmes out there. Bar none. This, and your Dickens, anchor my Kindle.

A couple small suggestions for further revisions:

1. Eliminate the page-breaks between the individual book title-pages ("xxx/published in 0000") and the book's contents listing, i.e. put them all on one page. Trivial, but it eliminates a couple extra clicks.

2. Kick the story/chapter titles up a point size or two.(<font size="+2">)

I've edited my mobi copy to do that and it helps. But then, as my friends will tell you, I need all the help I can get.

DeGodefroi 12-23-2011 05:08 AM

It is awesome mate!

And you are nicer then the Daleks. :-0
" Exterminate exterminate exterminate!"

the.Mtn.Man 12-29-2011 01:21 PM

Thanks for this. It's certainly more convenient than my hardback copy!

I also notice that you've rearranged the stories in published order which is a nice change since the epub I had before had the novels listed first and then then the short stories.

Edit: Oops, wrong version, but I'm sure my comments apply to the Mobi as well!

decat88ba 04-13-2012 04:52 AM

I just created an account in order to tell you all, and Harry T in particular, that you are [edit - mod] amazing. Been a Holmes fan for a while, and these complete edition really helps to unclutter my kindle library and get those stories I was having a hard time finding. So thank again, for all the hard work.

Btw, daleks rock.

The indents are different sizes for different paragraphs for some reason.

So is there any way to fix this?

Possibly, if you could give some specific examples of this problem. I.e. where exactly did you notice it and what kind of Kindle do you have?

Joshua.P 04-27-2012 09:50 AM

Ok. I have the kindle 3. Well you can see it most during speech. So search for "Poor devil" and it'll bring you to a paragraph of speech, and then you can see that the indents aren't the same. I've viewed it on calibre as well. You can basically find it anywhere.

I just looked at my copy and couldn't find any problems. The indents may appear to be different because one of the paragraphs starts with a quotation mark and the other doesn't, but that's the same in printed books and ebooks.

Billi 04-27-2012 12:05 PM

Opened it with Mobipocket Reader for PC and couldn't find a problem either. Looks all okay.

Joshua.P 04-28-2012 04:36 AM

Well, they're definitely different sized indents. I don't know what your talking about. I've compared it with different ebooks and paperbacks even though I didn't need to, and somethings obviously wrong. But if no one else can see it I don't know what I can do about it. Sorry for wasting your time.

Joshua.P 04-28-2012 04:52 AM

Hey if any one else has this problem I fixed it. Just enable heuristic processing for indents.

Can you post a photograph of the screen illustrating the problem, please?

Okey dokey. Look for the difference between "poor devil" and "looking". Its only a minor difference tho.

Joshua.P 04-28-2012 06:08 AM

So am I crazy?

No, but you discovered an interesting Calibre bug, because the same page looks OK on an actual Kindle.
You may want to inform the Calibre people about this.

Joshua.P 04-28-2012 06:48 AM

Oh ok. Glad that's cleared up.

Jellby 04-28-2012 07:39 AM

I bet it's because indents are done with a group of "&nbsp;". In some readers, the &nbsp; does not stretch with justification, but it's possible it does in others.

Are they? I thought I was using "width=1em" for indents in the Sherlock Holmes. I've started doing that in my more recent books. If I'm not doing that with the Holmes, I'll make sure that I do so when I next update it.

Jellby 04-28-2012 02:50 PM

I don't know, it was just a bet :)

HarryT 04-29-2012 01:36 PM

I've just checked and you're right - the indentation is done with spaces. These days I prefer to do it with "width=" (it's more consistent across devices) so I'll make sure that I change it when I next do an update.

Hey, Harry. I made a new cover in inkscape for my own use with this book. It's not particularly good but I'd like you to look at it. And if you like it maybe put it in the next update? The cover is similar to yours but a little bit improved. I could email the svg.

jadedragon61 08-27-2013 08:08 AM

Just what I was looking for. Thank you!

crich70 08-27-2013 11:28 AM

Very nice cover, thanks for sharing. :)

jtkenny_2006 06-21-2014 03:10 AM
