Problem of the section list with Chinese Fonts and Kindle 3
Hello,
I'm using the shared "BBC Chinese Recipe" to download the news into my Kindle3. It's very awesome and the content of News Web Pages can be displayed correctly for reading. However, I encounter a problem with Kindle3 to read the "section list" of the downloaded news -- All the Chinese Fonts in the section list, including news titles or section names are not displayed correctly. Only some scrambled rectangle are shown. I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Could anyone please provide some guidance or solutions? Thanks, Jmot. |
IIRC the Kindle uses a font for those lists that doesn't support Chinese characters. The only solution I know of is to hack the Kindle and replace that font. A little bit of googling should tell you how.

Hi Kovidgoyal,
Do you mean breakjail and Font Hack for Kindle3, described in : https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88004 ? I did hack the font successfully, unfortunately, this got the same problem about the section list. Am I missing anything? Your comments will be very appreciated. Thanks, Jmot. |
In any case, even though the "section list" doesn't work, I found there is a "table of content" in the very end of the MOBI file generated from the recipe. I can use that TOC to browse the articles with my Kindle3. But my question would be -- if there is a way to create the TOC in the very "beginning" of the MOBI file? That's would be easier to use. :-)

I have the same problem using romanian diacritics like ă,ş,ţ,î but only in Section list where the newspaper's title appears.
In View Section, View Articles and in the document's content all characters are fine. For example when i open Section list for Gândul newspaper his title appears like Gâbdul but in Calibre appears ok. |

That bug is about title in books list, for my documents the title has weird characters only in subscription's content.
For testing i create a recipe where title is: title = u'Adevărulaaş-ș-ţ-ț-Ţ-Ț-ă-Ă-â-Â-î-Î' and feeds: feeds = [ (u'Știriă-Ă-â-Â-î-Î', u'http://www.adevarul.ro/rss/latest'), (u'Știriă-ş-ș-ţ-ț-Ţ-Ț', u'http://www.adevarul.ro/rss/latest') ] The title in documents list is ok but when i open the book and check Section list the title is wrong but feeds are ok. I attach a print screen. |
Right, what Sorin said is exactly similar to the problem I saw with Chinese...

Kindle firmware 3.1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200529700) apparently solves the CJK display problem in book title and section view. I would suggest you to try this out.

I updated the Kindle firmware and found it did solve my program. That's really great! Thanks a lot for the suggestion.
