sort of English Duokan

6 Attachment(s)
NOTE !

There is now an English release !! Links and instructions appear later in this thread.

If you have an unsupported language, the first pages here might give you some ideas

---------------------------
I have a Kindle 3 wifi where I have installed

* jailbreak-0.3.N
* ss-0.13.N

Skipped fonts as I installed Duokan-Kindle, version 0.5.13.5642 Beta23.
( think I found it http://u.115.com/file/f042df3f97 )

And now I am completly lost !! I don't understand any Chinese, of course ;)

Did some attempt to make some of it understandable, used Google translate and
replaced files.

Save a copy of the original folders,
DK_System/system/MenuConfig
DK_System/system/Profiles
DK_System/system/skin

Unpack my archieves somewhere, and overwrite the files on the Kindle.

I would begin with
MenuItem.dat
FontInfo.txt
systemConfig.ini
TxtSheZhiTopMenu.txt
and so on..

It is a poor translation, but probably easier to understand then
the original Chinese ;) One of their characters may translate to a whole
sentence. What you may place inside a fixed sized character array, limits
what you can acheive. Use a hex-editor if you want to try and change anything.

Hopefully there will be translations, but I could not find any. Still remaining
pages to do, and things can be improved.

Include a couple of screenshots.

I don't plan to say much on this forum, but after all the slavery - it would be nice if someone else could find it useful - good luck ;)

PS! - while uploading, I renamed files from .tgz to .tar - just rename them again if they don't unpack.

Oh, when I said:
"Unpack my archieves somewhere, and overwrite the files on the Kindle." - do this on your computer, and by adding those files, one at a time, you may see where and how things change. If for some reason something goes wrong, - it will try to restart the Duokan-system. If not it may boot up in the official Kindle version. Correct your last entry, and try to restart it. In Amazon Kindle -> menu->settings-> restart. When the Chinese page appear, hit "Q" for Duokan and "W" for Amazon official version. It will default to the system you have set under system-settings.

If any can add improvements, please do. If anyone could improve the install with a script, please do. If someone have source code, please - let us see it .

Thanks..

UPDATE - added my system-settings pages, which is my original translation ( not the english version that is released now. )

thank you for all your hard work :2thumbsup

There's a rumor of an upcoming English translation for the Duokan's firmware, but nobody seems to know when it will be ready.

Welcome to MobileRead, FethryDuck

Barty 11-03-2010 07:56 PM

Thanks for your hard work and for sharing!

Last I checked out duokan, the reader had no font kerning. I mean, each letter takes up a fixed amount of space. It made the text, in English anyway, much less pleasant to read. Is that still the case?

NiLuJe 11-03-2010 08:07 PM

I think you're speaking about a monospaced font (which, I guess, makes sense on CJK glyphs). I imagine there's a way to change the font, in order to use a proper Serif or Sans font.

Thanks, I have missed out on these threads. Wonder when we will see some English version.

Anyway, if someone knows where/what the network is hooking up to, it would be nice to know. We don't want to annoy them by accident. Perhaps it should be disabled or routed to some English sites. ( did some answer with pressing all keys in frustration ;)

Include some spreadsheet pages. Perhaps it can be of some help or insight. If your native language is "Duckbergian", then you may work out your personal edition - it will take years before we will see a version of that language.

Quack, Quack

avidworm 11-05-2010 04:42 PM

great thanks for this, works great.

i installed mobileread jailbreak, then latest duokan for 3G, then copied over your files.

Edit: deleted

Rinzwind 11-06-2010 11:52 AM

6 dirs

3 that need to be moved to the Kindle:
1. DK_Documents
2. DK_Pictures
3. DK_System

The other 3 dirs show "invalid encoding" but...
- 1 of these 3 has pdfs in them in 4 dirs: DXG, DX, K2, K3
Look like manuals(??)
- 1 of these has windows installation files. Something for syncing with the kindle???
- 1 of them has bin files insides 4 dirs: DXG, DX, K2, K3

Looks like the 1st 3 need to be copied to my system and then I need to use the correct BIN file to do the update.

I hope I have this figured out correctly :D

edit 2:
montalex: with "original folders" they probably are talking about an older version of duokan. Since my "root" folder does not have DK*-folders ;)

edit 3:
update succesful
kindle restarting

almost done :)

edit 4:
It came up without any problems. Now how do I check if it all went well? Hmmm :P

avidworm 11-06-2010 12:06 PM

well installed v11 okay (if you had another version just replace the DK_System folder with latest and put the K3 bins into root (the kindle will automatically install correct bin file)

but seems the default gui is chinese, anyone know how to switch it to English?

cheers

WS64 11-06-2010 12:09 PM

http://dl.dbank.com/c0u2w5mxdn#

I got chinese too :D :D
And damn, I suck at chinese :D :D

Hmm during reboot I get a page in chinese and then my kindle goes back to the normal kindle version. Looks like it did not work as expected :(

The 1st pages seems to show Q and W as specific keys. Could it be to turn duokan on/off? :)

I assume that you are telling us how to set the language to English, yes?

Could you please explain it so that the slower amongst us can understand?

Also, with this new English version, will I get a boot screen after install, so that I can use the default Kindle software after Duokan install.

Edit: I just saw your last post -- is Q or W Duokan?

Your help is much appreciated!

Montralex

Hi Avidworm,

We are writing at the same time. I was wondering, at start up, which letter (Q or W) gets me into Duokan.

Nevermind

Thanks.

Rinzwind 11-06-2010 12:52 PM

avidworm:
= wifi connecting
= insert password
Text shown "conectting".

That should be "connecting" ;)

2 problems:
1. I can not get wifi to connect to my router.
2. How do I get books back that are on my kindle. My main menu is empty.

montalex 11-06-2010 01:02 PM

So, we have:

How to install the system:
1. Extract DK_System, DK_Documents and DK_Pictures to the Kindle root directory.
If you have a previously installed version of Duokan installed, replace DK_System with the new DK_System folder;
Then continue with these steps).

2. If your Kindle2 is an international version, "Update_DK_k2i.bin" file to the Kindle root directory (Note: here is a copy of the appropriate File, not the whole folder. Bin files are identified in English in their respective folders).
If your Kindle2 is a U.S. version, copy "Update_DK_k2.bin" file to the Kindle root directory

Unplug Kindle from U.S.B. and Update: Menu/settings/menu/update

For Kindle 3:

Restart. Select Q to boot into Duokan.

Language setting:

After it starts up press
MENU
Go to J (wording is "settings" in Chinese ) and activate it.
Go to the 3rd page ( > > > ).
Choose D (wording is "language" in Chinese ) and activate it.
Choose C (a is traditional, b is simplified, c is English, d Japanese and e Korean).

got to page 3 at line F Support Old Sytem click Yes
to get books already on kindle

Restart. Select Q to boot into Duokan.

If you have Kindle 2:

After it starts up press
MENU.
Select #1 for Duokan.

Select #0 for settings (a little wrench symbol)
go to page 3, select 3, then select 2 for English. (you have 5 choices, which are:
0. Simplified Chinese
1. Traditional Chinese
2. English
3. Japanese
4. Korean

Go again to menu, page 3,
select #5 Support Old System, select Yes
to get books already on kindle

For Kindle DX
Select option 0 on the menu (Wrench) (or use Alt+Sym for settings)
Go to PAGE 2 (Not 3)
Select Option G (D )
Select option 2 English

I tried that with an epub ( :) ) and after a reboot contents of DK Documents showed up.
But I get an "Open failed".

Going to try avidworm's suggestion now.

AVIDWORM YOU ROCK!!!!! *O*

Is that right?

yes also the particular bin for your kindle (you need to get the right folder) can be recognised automatically so you don't need to remember which bin is for your kindle. i.e. i know my bins are in kindle3 folder so i just copy those bin files to root and the right bin gets chosen when you update

montalex 11-06-2010 01:14 PM

THanks, much guys. I added the last direction to my collation of your directions.

montalex 11-06-2010 01:49 PM

O.K. I have installed and restarted several times, and I get a very quick flash screen with 3 choices -- Maybe just 2. #1 is in Chinese only -- this is Duokan: #2 has the word Kindle surrounded by Chinese. I have to press the number key on my Kindle to get into Duokan. I'm in now. If I am not back by dark, inform the proper authorities.

Also, I have numbers, not letter in my version. I had to go to Menu, 0 for settings (a little wrench symbol) page 3, select 3, then select 3 again for English. Judicious use of Google translate got me there.

I have Kindle2i

It is pitch dark overhere so I called 112 and told them to warn the feds :+

don't forget to post your bug reports and wrong translations to the duokan forum at www.duokan.com

I started this thread there: http://www.duokan.com/forum/thread-4688-1-1.html . Some of them speak english ;=)

use the google translator for registering and finding the correct buttons ^^

montalex 11-06-2010 02:16 PM

unbe-fuggin-lievable! I got reflowable pdf! Select auto layout from the font menu Aa, then use that key again to get a menu to select type size. I am reading Wordsworth in the Oxford Book of American Poetry, a book that was useless in pdf on a Kindle2 screen. There are a million setting in there!

What a trip.

flipkick 11-06-2010 02:25 PM

type size for PDF? FINALLY! i love these chinese people

Done :D

2 times: "Conecting..." -> "Connecting..."

And I can not get wireless to work :(
It works on the default firmware but the duokan fw always shows me a "failed" :(
