Posting Guidelines

Our Aim

MobileRead aims to be a friendly and inclusive forum. In order to keep things that way, we need a few guidelines to remind ourselves of what's expected.

1. Discuss Things Politely

Our members have developed a strong, constructive online community. To help maintain this friendly, supportive atmosphere, we ask that you follow these standards of politeness.

MobileRead is intended to be a family-safe and work-safe website. Please post accordingly.

Do attempt to state your point of view in a way that avoids misunderstanding. Remember that we are an international community and not all members are posting in their first language.

When things get controversial please disagree with the opinion, not the person.

Try to be sensitive to others when you post, and tolerant of others when you read their posts.

A rude comment is still rude, even if you follow it with a smiley, "just kidding" or "I'm only joking" or "This is meant to be humorous."

Avoid excessive emphasis. Typing in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS is considered yelling or shouting. Capitalizing (or using bold) for rare occasions when emphasis is required is OK, but use it judiciously.

Deliberately provoking other members is prohibited. Members who post provocative or inflammatory posts will be warned. Persistent offenders may be banned.

Name calling is not permitted, even in the form of a question, e.g. "X's posts make me wonder how much he believes what he's saying, or if he's just a troll."

MobileRead reserves the right to limit discussion that is outside the realm of good taste, or uses foul or hateful language. We won't tolerate any form of hate-speech.

Remember that you can use the "ignore" function to ignore a member whose posts irritate you, but you must not announce in open forum that you have done so.

2. Staying on Topic

Threads have a life of their own and may stray in all sorts of directions. However, if the original poster, or a moderator, requests that a thread stay on topic then please respect their wishes. You could start a thread of your own about the new topic, if you want. If a thread moves to parallel discussion of two separate topics then you may also request a moderator to move posts related to a new topic to their own thread with the "Report Posts" function.

3. Duplication

Do not post the same discussion in more than one forum. Try to pick the most relevant forum for your post.

If it's been a few days since the last comment in your thread and you haven't received a suitable answer to your question, you may bump your thread by commenting in it. You must not ask the same question in a new thread in the same forum.

If you receive no replies, and you think you may have chosen the wrong forum, report your post and ask the moderators to move it to the right forum.

4. Quotation

Please do not misrepresent someone else's views when involved in a discussion. When quoting, feel free to quote a section, rather than the whole post.

5. Advertising and Promotion

Please post in our Flea Market section if you want to buy or sell a reading device (or other item relevant to mobile reading) for your personal use only.

If you have something to promote – e.g. a new book, a new reading device, or other item relevant to mobile reading, then you may announce it, and respond to questions, in the Self-Promotions forum. Please read and follow the additional Promotion Posting Guidelines. Members who abuse these guidelines may be treated as spammers.

6. Spam

Spam is defined as unsolicited advertising: either unrelated to the content of our forum, or relevant but ubiquitous. Spammers will be banned.

7. Political and Religious Topics

Past experience has shown that threads on religious or political matters frequently lead to heated debates, and detract from the lively, fun-loving atmosphere that MobileRead is intended to have.

If you are interested in discussing these topics, please review this thread for instructions on how to opt in to a dedicated section.

MobileRead reserves the right to disapprove topics and to edit or delete posts about politics and religion posted outside the dedicated Politics and Religion forum.

8. Links, Uploads, Copyright and DRM

Links to sites that violate copyright are forbidden and will be deleted. URL shortening services may not be used.

MobileRead does not condone or support the use of this web site to break the law. This means that we will not allow posting of instructions showing someone how to break the law, requests for such instructions, nor uploads or links to items that have the sole purpose of breaking the law.

EBooks uploaded to this site must be in the "life+70" public domain, or licensed under a compatible Creative Commons license. This means that the author (or translator) of the book must have died at least 70 years before the start of the current year. It is up to the individual to determine whether any particular eBook on MobileRead is legal to download in their country.

Our guidelines regarding sexually explicit content also apply to eBooks uploaded to this site.

While DRM removal may be discussed in the abstract, the following are not allowed at MobileRead:

  • discussing DRM removal to pirate content;
  • providing detailed how-to instructions;
  • uploading of DRM-removal tools;
  • direct download links to DRM-removal tools.

Further information on our policy on copyright, uploads and DRM can be found here.

9. Avatars, Images and Signatures

General posting guidelines also apply to avatars, images and signatures.

Animated avatars are discouraged but permitted. Excessively flashy or annoying animated avatars may be deleted.

Images included in posts must be no more than 600x600 pixels. Individual forum sections, including the Self-Promotions forum, may require smaller images. Please read the Promotion Posting Guidelines for specific information. You may use a picture as a link to a larger picture elsewhere.

When posting images that are in the public domain, we recommend that you use the attachment feature or your MobileRead album, rather than directly linking to offsite locations. This way we can ensure that the images won't suddenly disappear. (This is also good netiquette as it is not using someone else's bandwidth.)

Signatures are required to be discreet and unobtrusive. The total height of a signature must not exceed 100 pixels (six lines of default size text), and the width must not exceed 600 pixels.

Discreet, non-animated graphics are allowed in signatures, within the overall signature size limits. Ideally signature graphics should be uploaded to MobileRead.

Advertisement and promotion unrelated to eBook and mobile reading in a signature must be limited to only one line of non-bold default size text.

10. Duplicate Accounts (Sockpuppeting)

You can have only one account. Duplicate accounts (or sockpuppets) are commonly employed by vandals and bad-faith contributors who create multiple user accounts in an attempt to bias discussions. Sockpuppeting is an offense on MobileRead and will not be tolerated.

11. New Member Restrictions

We have found it necessary to add certain anti-spam measures. They include restrictions to new user registrations. For example, new members cannot set up a signature and they may not manually add an in-post signature to their posts.

These restrictions are lifted automatically once a new member has proved to be a member with good intentions (which directly correlates to number of posts and length of time as a member).

12. When Things go Wrong

Do not comment about other member's possible guideline violations on open forum. Instead, please use the "report post" button to report any post that appears to contravene these guidelines. It is the button at the lower-left of posts and the upper right of private messages.

The moderators will attend to such reports as soon as possible.

(You may also use the "report post" button for anything which requires moderator attention, including moving a thread, fixing a title, etc. )

Similarly, discussions or questions about the actions of the Moderating Team are not permitted on open forum. Moderation actions are confidential between the team and the member in question. If you have any questions about an action, please address them to the team or other member by Private Message.

While the administrators and moderators of this forum will attempt to remove or edit any objectionable material as quickly as possible, it is impossible to review every message. All posts made to these forums express the views and opinions of their authors and not the administrators, moderators or web-master (except for posts by these people) and hence they will not be held liable.

If you have more specific questions about this website, you can always contact the webmaster.

Giveaway Guidelines

No Purchase Required to Enter or Win.

1. Eligibility

MobileRead Giveaways (the "Giveaway") are open only to residents of countries where such contests are allowed by the laws of those countries. By entering the Giveaway, you accept sole responsibility for determining whether your participation is legal in any jurisdiction that applies to you. Participants must be of the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence and have an active email account and Internet access at the time of entry. By entering, you agree to these "Official Rules" and that the decisions of MobileRead, four dots GmbH, are final and binding in all respects.

Void where prohibited or restricted by law.

2. Sponsor

Sponsors of the Giveaway ("Sponsor") are located on the applicable Giveaway page.

3. Agreement to Official Rules

Participation in a Giveaway constitutes entrant's full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsor, which are final and binding. Winning a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.

4. Entry Period

The start and end times/dates (the "Entry Period") are located on the applicable Giveaway page. MobileRead, four dots GmbH, reserves the right to terminate the promotion by giving notice deemed appropriate.

5. Entry

Follow the directions on the applicable Giveaway page to submit your entry. The use of any agencies, automated software, or multiple identities to submit entries will void all entries submitted by that person.

6. Drawing

Winner(s) will be selected in a random drawing. The odds of being selected as a potential winner depend on the number of eligible entries received during the applicable Entry Period. Potential winner(s) will be contacted via email and asked to provide their full name, age and mailing address. If a potential winner does not respond within the timeframe stated in the notification email, an alternate potential winner may be selected in his/her place at random from all entries received during the Entry Period.

7. Requirements of the Potential Winners

Except where prohibited, the potential winner(s) may be required to complete and return an affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release (the "Affidavit/Release") within seven (7) days of being notified. If a potential winner fails to sign and return the Affidavit/Release within the required time period, an alternate entrant may be selected in his/her place in a random drawing of all entries received. Acceptance of a prize constitutes consent to use winner's name and likeness for editorial, advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law. In the event the potential winner of any prize is a Canadian resident, he/she may also be required to correctly answer a time-limited mathematical question to be administered by email, mail or phone to receive the prize.

8. Prize(s)

The prize(s) (and their approximate retail values) are located on the applicable Giveaway page. No cash or other substitution may be made, except by the Sponsor, who reserves the right to substitute a prize with another prize of equal or greater value if the prize is not available for any reason as determined by the Sponsor in its sole discretion. The winner may be responsible for any taxes and fees (such as duties) associated with receipt or use of a prize.

9. General Conditions

In the event that the operation, security, or administration of the Giveaway is impaired in any way for any reason, including, but not limited to fraud, virus, or other technical problem, the Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, either: (a) suspend the Giveaway to address the impairment and then resume the Giveaway in a manner that best conforms to the spirit of these Official Rules; or (b) award the prize at random from among the eligible entries received up to the time of the impairment. The Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Giveaway or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to undermine the legitimate operation of the Giveaway may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, the Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. The Sponsor's failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. In case of a dispute as to the owner of an entry, entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized account holder of the screen name from which the entry is made. The authorized account holder is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.

10. Release and Limitations of Liability

By participating in the Giveaway, entrants agree to release, defend indemnify and hold harmless the Giveaway Entities from and against any claim or cause of action, including without limitation, any third party claim, arising out of participation in the Giveaway or receipt, use or misuse of any prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human intervention in the Giveaway; (b) technical errors related to computers, servers, providers, or telephone or network lines; (c) printing errors; (d) lost, late, postage-due, misdirected, or undeliverable mail; (e) errors in the administration of the Giveaway or the processing of entries; or (f) injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant's participation in the Giveaway or receipt, use or misuse of any prize. Entrant further agrees that in any cause of action, the Giveaway Entities' liability will be limited to the cost of entering and participating in the Giveaway, and in no event shall the Giveaway Entities be liable for attorney's fees. Entrant waives the right to claim any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE PRIZES AND ALL ELEMENTS THEREOF ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OR CONDITION OF ANY KIND. SPONSOR DISCLAIMS ALL EXPRESS AND IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND/OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. Some jurisdictions do not allow the disclaimer of implied warranties. In such jurisdictions, some of the foregoing disclaimers may not apply to you insofar as they relate to implied warranties.

11. Disputes

By participating in the Giveaway, entrants agree that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of, or connected with, the Giveaway or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the appropriate court located in Switzerland. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, entrant's rights and obligations, or the rights and obligations of the Sponsors in connection with the Giveaway, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of Switzerland, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of Switzerland or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than Switzerland. Further, in any such dispute, under no circumstances will entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and hereby waives all rights to claim punitive, incidental or consequential damages, or any other damages, including attorneys' fees, other than entrant's actual out-of-pocket expenses (i.e., costs associated with entering the giveaway), and entrant further waives all rights to have damages multiplied or increased.

12. Giveaway Results

The names of the winners will be announced by being posted on the Web site.
