Introduction
This is finally a real
set of HiResFonts specially tuned for the use with a Clié. It requires FontHack
123 v4.0c. A detailed manual on how to
install the fonts is included (You can find it in the lower section of this
file!).
Lubak's "Handera"
fonts served me as a basis for these fonts: more fonts by Lubak are
here: http://www.domino.sk/lubak
I
changed many symbols, and some of the letters, and improved the overall
look.
swiz is only compatible with High Resolution (320x320p) Sony Cliés. If other companies release a handheld with HiRes it may or may not be compatible.
swiz features the following fonts:
-normal font (22p,
narrow, very good readability)
-bold font (22p, also
narrow)
-thin font (22p, only 1pixel broad, very narrow;
Read the advancedSetup.htm on how to use these.) ![]()
-large font (28p,
specially designed for Clie's)
-large thin font
(28p, not as bold as the large font; Read the advancedSetup.htm on how to use
these.) ![]()
-small font (16p,
very good readability, very much on one page, especially useful in NoteFields,
MemoPad, pedit...)![]()

Before and
After: swiz HiRes Fonts are on the left. On the right, you see Sony's
standard HiRes fonts. Please notice that the first three Fonts have the same
hight as before and therefore fit perfectly for almost every application on Palm
OS. Only the LargeBold Font is now a Small Font instead. I chose this one to be
the smaller one, since it is not used very often.
-small (lowRes) font (14p, this looks almost the same as the first smallfont, but is really a lowRes font; it is specially designed for apps like DateBk5 (in ListView), iSilo, Planetarium, MiniCalc, McFile, and many more which can display those very small fonts; this one is much more readable)

iSilo lets you choose the small 14point font, with norrow
spaces. It's optimized for use with long text. The picture on the right
shows Sony's Small font.
0. Preparation
0.a Check if you have a HiRes Clié . (If you don't you can stop reading this
document, now.)
0.b Check if you have a Hackmanager (e.g. Hackmaser, Tealmaster, X-Master ) installed. X-Master is for free.
0.c Check if you have FontHack123 version 4.0c installed. If you don't,
get the newest version from palmgear.com for free.
1. Installation
Install the swiz##.pdb (where ## is the version number) file
from this swiz.zip file on your Clié, by unzipping it, and then double-clicking
it on your PC. When you sync for the next
time, it will be installed on your Clié.
2. Set up FontHack as
following (also look at the graphics below):
| Font | will be replaced by: | hight | |
|
Standard |
swiz##(0) | Standard LowRes Substitution Font | 11p |
| Bold | swiz##(0) | Standard LowRes Substitution Font | 11p |
| Large | swiz##(1) | small HiRes* Font | 14p |
| LrgBold | swiz##(2) | Small LowRes Substitution Font | 8p |
| HRStandard | swiz##(3) | Standard HiRes Font | 22p |
| HRBold | swiz##(4) | Bold HiRes Font | 22p |
| HRLarge | swiz##(5) | Large HiRes Font | 28p |
| HRLrgBold | swiz##(6) | Small HiRes Font | 16p |
* in applications like: DateBk5 (in ListView), iSilo,
Planetarium, MiniCalc, McFile, and many more;
of
course it also serves as the Large LowRes Substitution Font for the Large
HiRes Font

On the
Details screen of FontHack you will see two pulldown menus and a list. In the
list, select a font, so it has a blue background. Now choose the second pulldown
menu and select the right font. Select the next font in the list and again
choose the corresponding font in the pulldown menu. And so on. You will have a
list which shows the system fonts on the left and the replacing fonts on the
right. When you are ready, tap Savexit. For further details, consider FontHack's
manual.
3. Activate FontHack in your Hackmanager.
Read how to make a special setup and how to optimize swiz for certain applications in the advancedSetup.htm.
The first four fonts are only so called substitution fonts. They are required, so that the HiRes fonts work as they should. The third font is for apps, that can display smallFonts.
Your HiResFonts will be as following: Std/Bold/Large fonts will be as the name says.
LargeBold will really
be a very nice smallFont, smaller than all the others. Use this font in MemoPad,
in pedit, in the notefield of Datebook, DateBk5, in Bonsai; basically in every
larger editField on your Clié.
Please try to install the fonts this way. If you want to replace only one of your fonts by my fonts, you should never forget to also install the adequate lowRes font.
Please notice that in applications which don't support HiRes, my fonts are not very readable. This is because those Substitution Fonts need to have the same width as the HiRes Fonts. If it is an important application for you, you might want to consider to deinstall my fonts in only this app. This works great with FontHack.
To learn how to individualize your setup and how to use the all new ThinFonts read the advancedSetup.htm
You might want to install NoLinesHack or ClearHack to remove the "rulers" for even better readability. I think NoLinesHack does the better job, since it removes all lines consequently i every text field. If you descide to try one of those hack, try it atlleast for one day, since to a senior palmer those lines are so familiar that he can't be without them. But, if you try it long enough, you will understand why I don't like those lines!

All Fonts in DateBk5 with NoLinesHack activated. And on the
right with lines.
If you don't like a sign or letter and you can explain what you don't like and maybe even what I should change, please write me about it:erich.kupferschmid@gmx.ch . Don't tell me that you like "Times" better, since I won't change the whole font.
I used Pilot Font Editor (for Windows) v1.2 by Sergey Menshikov to create these fonts.
