My first irritating Kindle 2 gripe...

This is a really stupid irritation, that can easily be fixed should Amazon choose to. OK, so now, with the new joystick thing, the Kindle can selectively refresh parts of the display. What this means is that only the central part of the screen refreshes (i.e. the bulk of the text you're reading) and NOT the very top and very bottom of the screen. That means that if you're in the middle of a book, and put the unit to sleep, the bottom of the screen reads: "Hold the power button to wake the Kindle up" (or something like that). But that means that whenever I'm reading after I wake my Kindle up, I can read those EXACT words at the bottom of the screen, since the e-ink ghosting leaves those words there, and it NEVER refreshes. So the whole time I'm reading, I can still read the words at the bottom telling me how to wake my Kindle up. AND, at the very top of the display, I can see the sliver of the screen-saver image! Stupid! Anyway, this really bugs me, and I hope Amazon realize they need to refresh the whole screen when it comes out of sleep to eliminate this. |

Sounds like a bug to me. Does everyone with a K2 see this? Quote:

I have this problem also. Plus, I get some ghosting when changing from a picture (book cover) to other screens. Part of the picture remains in the back ground.

I see it on the K1 also but like on the K2 it goes away after a few page turns.

Lots of posts in regards to this on Amazon, I haven't gotten a good feel as to if the issue is the same or worse than Kindle I

I had heard about the "ghosting" issue, and after I started reading this thread I specifically scrutinized my K2... My K2 doesn't have this problem, not even a little, not even under very bright light. Whatever this problem is, it's not generic... |

Going from screensaver to book and having the ghosting at the bottom of the screen was a big dissapointment for me as well. Thankfully the amazon CSRs are relatively fast with the fix and posted tonight that using the shortcut alt-g will force a full refresh of the screen and remove any ghosting. |

And FYI, this happens on ALL Kindle 2s, since I have two, and it does it on both, so I'm 99.9999% sure it does it on all Kindle 2s. Good work Ajax!

Nice to know the ghosting is a software issue and not a hardware issue.

It's just that the page doesn't FULLY refresh when it switches pages at the moment. Which is fine, EXCEPT coming out of sleep it NEEDS to do a full refresh. Let's just hope Amazon can "properly" fix this. It's a VERY simple thing to fix.

sounds as if this selective refresh would have an influence on the battery life. would possibly be an intentional behavior to increase the battery life. amazon is claiming a 25% iincrease. so could it be if amazon changes this behavior the battery life would decrease a bit?

No it would have zero effect on battery life since it would only refresh the whole screen once, just when it comes out of sleep.
