Quake 3 Arena for WM adds video acceleration

Just when we think we've seen it all, along comes Quake 3 Arena ported for Windows Mobile, this time touching your chainsaw wielding inner psychopath through direct hardware video acceleration for the Dell Axim X50v/51v series. Other new features since 1.0 include:
  • Windows Mobile 5 - This version works with Windows Mobile 5, but still requires the same amount of memory as it would under PPC2003. Dell Axim x51v users may be out of luck without some system tweaking and optimization. 64MB simply isn't enough when your operating system only affords you 21MB to play with.
  • Software Optimization - We have converted the entire codebase over to fixed point arithmetic for faster execution on handhelds.
  • Memory Auto-tuning - No more configuring your memory panel. This release will autotune its memory use for your device.

Grab Q3CE 1.1 from here or directly from here.

There's a version available for non accelerated PPCs as well, but don't expect the same level of performance, of course. I really must give it a try... now where did I put my Q3 cds....

I've seen Quake Mobile on a X50v, and believe me, it's breathtaking!! Virtually no frame drops, and the thing looks so sharp on the tiny 3.7" 640x480 display. It's a shame so few game developers are taking advantage of the Intel 2700, the multimedia chip inside the X50v.

Well, I have an XV6600 ppc phone from verizon, and its pretty powerful. I'm not sure if it has video acceleration, but it does have a 400mhz processor. How can I tell if I have video acceleration?

The only accelerated PPC's around at the moment are the Dell Axim X50/51v or Ipaq 4700's with VGA screens. It sounds like you'll have enough grunt to try it out with some chance of success, though.

[Edit] Actually, I should qualify by saying that those are the devices I'm aware of at the moment. There are other VGA devices about (like the Toshiba) but I don't know if they have a hardware accelerator on board.

how is the gameplay? It must be rough with the d-pad button, right?

I haven't tried it yet, I just haven't had the time to pull my Q3/Q3A CD's out of storage and try it out, yet. I'm keen on hearing how the game play is as well, though!
