  • Thickness 12mm
  • Weight: 480g (A4), 320g (A5)
  • Body colors: White pearl, pink pearl, silver
  • Features: Touch panel, scroll button, six function buttons
  • OS: MS Windows CE5.0

That-just-doesn't-sound-right. I mean I could buy a freaking 65-inch Plasma TV for this (and still save a couple of grants)...

The price is crazy. And 10secs for 4,096 ? This product should stay in a lab for a while...

I cannot believe the price either.

Btw, the Gizmodo article has a real photo of the device (in both sizes)... the A4 looks lovely to me.

More info:

In japanese:

Automatic japanese-english translation courtesy of excite.co.jp (the one I use for reading japanese pages; it does a reasonable work):

The (very high) prices they quote in the press release are for product samples, not the final retail price.

Ok extra details:
About the runtime:
"Contents of 50 hours can be displayed by one charge work. (When the contents display interval is assumed to be one minute, and you display the color image of eight colors by 3,000 pages. )。"

Sales goals and release time:
"The sample sales in fiscal year 2007 schedule 1,000(It is 200 during month).
The canvass for sale in the general sale and all parts of the world is begun in fiscal year 2008, and I will aim at the total sales 10 billion yen by the end of fiscal year 2010."

And hopefully, these are not the real prices, just the product sample price. But I guess we'll have to expect something expensive too for the real product. They say that you have to buy at least 10 sample devices if you want one. Maybe the sample price is for 10 devices ?

About $1/word? That seems fair to me.

Could it be hacked to run linux?

I wonder which kind of touch panel they're using. Regular touch screens are less transparent than the wacom variety, which is why the iLiad uses wacom -- you need that extra transparency for a reflective screen like e ink.

Ok, this explains why it's probably more expensive than the Reader
