Kindle Bargain Books - Suspense/Thriller $2.00 or Less (US)

The Silver Bear - Derek Haas- $1.76

Product Description

"The intense psychological portrait of a hitman--the anti-Jason Bourne--as he stalks his prey from Boston to LA. He wants you to know him, maybe even admire him, but only for his excellence in his craft. Perhaps he was even born for it. ""A natural killer,"" his mentor--a middleman named Vespucci--said he was. He proved it with his first professional hit: a Fifth Circuit Court judge in Boston, executed with a sheet of Saran Wrap in the stairwell of her own courthouse. He's proved his merit often, usually with a Glock semiautomatic, but he's improvised too, with his bare hands, the heel of a shoe, knives, even a sewing machine. He is the consummate assassin, at the top of his form, immune to the psychological strains of his chosen profession. He is what the Russians call a Silver Bear. He calls himself Columbus. It's the name Vespucci gave him, ten years ago, when he discovered a dark, new world of fences, clients, marks, jobs, jack. Not that his real name meant much to him anyway. He never knew his father or his mother, a prostitute who became dangerously involved back in the seventies with an earnest young congressman named Abe Mann, then a rising star in the Democratic Party. The magnetic Abe Mann has since become the Speaker of the House. He is currently running for the Democratic nomination in an exhausting presidential campaign, weaving his way across the country. Columbus is not far behind. But as he pieces together his past and prepares the seamless assassination of his mark, the criminal underworld he has always ruled begins unraveling violently around him."

The Last Enemy- Grace Brophy $2.00

Product Description

Rita grew up in Brooklyn, the only child of a narcissistic Italian mother and the GI she married at the end of World War II. After her mother’s death, she quits her teaching job and descends upon her poor but aristocratic relatives, the Count and Countess Casati, in Assisi. It takes a while before they realize, to their chagrin, that Rita has come to stay. When the family assembles to watch the penitentes procession in the town square during Easter Week, a Casati tradition, Rita does not join them as planned. Her corpse is later found in the family mausoleum.

Alessandro Cenni, a commissario in the State Police of Umbria, and a handsome bachelor whose twin brother is about to become a bishop, must penetrate the secrets of the Casati family and their circle if he is to discover who killed Rita and why. But he is blocked by their powerful right-wing connections, and by a superior who prefers to arrest a scapegoat rather than risk political suicide. Aided by a loyal staff in his quest for that rarity—justice—he still must acknowledge that no one can defeat the last enemy, death itself.

Grace Brophy grew up in Queens, New York. She now divides her time between New York and Terni, a village in Umbria, where she lives with her husband, a Uruguayan artist. This is the first in the Commissario Cenni series of investigations set in Italy.

This leads to a position with the Frank Givens detective agency in Midtown. Bailey is hired for various reasons, three of which are the fact that he comes cheap, he's green enough to be taught, and his boss is swamped with cases. Frank Givens tosses Bailey a case that should have been fairly routine: a New York City socialite requires dirt on her son's fiancée based on her suspicions of gold digging.

This last list looks like mostly self-published books. I know that Wet Desert and Charlie Parker, Debbie Mack and most of the others are; I thought these were generally banished to the author self-promotion forum? At least for those that you haven't read yourself (but not written yourself or by a relative or best friend) and recommend due to content. If you are going to list every self-published book in the genre, or even a half-dozen a day, the forum soon won't contain anything else but (and you'll never run out of material, of course).

Also, not sure how big the "deals" on them are, since most have been these prices for months (or years, in a few cases). Again, there are thousands of self-published books at these prices and most of them are on Smashwords, as well, which is no doubt a better source for many here in the deals forum (since all ereaders are then supported).

@Koland,

I don't know why you get so angry and nitpick everything I post here. I feel totally attacked. All the books are discounted to <$2.00, and I wouldn't know how long they have been discounted for. I thought they were interesting books. I guess it's up to the readers here to get the books or not. Jeez. If I'm doing something horribly wrong/ useless, please a mod let me know? Thanks.

In the case of Connie Shelton at least, she's one of those previously-established authors who's switched over to self-pubbing her former print backlist and releasing her newer works herself via CreateSpace.

Here's a listing for an old mass-market paperback copy of one of her books in said Charlie Parker series, published 1998 by a small press. And she's apparently included in this Chicken Soup for the Writer's Soul collection from 2000.

Disclaimer: I do not know and have no association with this author, beyond having downloaded a couple of her books free from Smashwords during the Read an E-Book Week promotion. I have not gotten around to reading them yet and cannot speak as to their quality or lack thereof.

And while I wouldn't dismiss self-published work out of hand if it looked interesting, I do consider it a greater deal when it's a regularly-published and priced title that's discounted for whatever reason.

Even though I'm never tempted to buy any of these things, it just looks like more of a "bargain" to see something that one of the major imprints has knocked down from 9.99 to 2.99 in an attempt to get it to move, then to see an indie work which seems to be starting at the same price for the same reasons.

Not angry. Just a bit tired of the self-published over here and in the other area as well.

It's easy to tell that they aren't discounted -- look at the list price (of the digital, not the print over on Createspace). Not to mention several of these authors are here on the boards.

Well, sorry for tiring you out with my posts.

I have in fact downloaded many of the books I posted, because I thought they were interesting and super cheap. And they do revert back to normal price (For example: the memoir 'The Forger' which I got for $1.43 went back to being $9.99).

So, question for the mods, am I not allowed to post these bargain books (for me) that I find? Is it considered spamming to post them? Because if I'm breaking the rules, then of course I won't post anymore.

I wasn't objecting to The Forger - just that last bunch of all indie/self-published (the $0.99 and $1.99 priced ones).

Personally I'm happy to see them posted here (particularly if the poster has read them and are not promoting their own/friends/family members/pet budgie's book).

And I know a few established authors who are considering self publishing their back catalogue because they are out-of-print and they have the rights to do so because their contracts were drawn up before ebooks became a serious consideration.

It's going to be increasingly hard to tell the difference in the future. But I understand Koland's POV in wanting to keep what could be a tidal wave of "discounted" self-published stuff that no-one would ever want to read out of here though. Anyhow I'm off for a quiet game of Scrabble.

Karen, I agree with your point -- I appreciate you bringing genuine deals on otherwise more expensive stuff. It's a deal if it's way cheaper than normal. Your sleuthing out great titles is MUCH appreciated.

But in a small voice, I would like to add that both Connie Shelton and Debbie Mack have written compelling, easy mysteries. I've read, and recommended, both. And, Shelton's Charlie Parker series is mainly $5+; so this first title is a bargain. (However, these "bargains" are regular price, too.)

Whew, I just came upon this thread and it looks like there was pretty good fight going on there for a while. Well, maybe not a fight- let's just call it a discusion

Anyway as far as suspense/thriller books that are under $2.00
I would check out D. Nathan Hillard. I read one of his short stories the other night and I really enjoyed it. Most of his shorts are on amazon for 99 cents I believe.

I've also become a fan of David Dalglish, but I think a lot of his stuff is a bit more expensive, He did have one book that was free for a while, not sure, it may still be.

Oh yeah, and my book is also under $2.00, but since some people seem to be getting annoyed with self promotion I won't mention it. ooops! lol
