The current Kindle 3G+WiFi firmware only allows you to turn both radios on or off together. Amazon may add the individual control of it in the future.

that's what i thought... well, something to consider for people who are deciding on 3g or wifi only. in retrospect i may have gone with the wifi only but either way, i got me an excellent reader! totally happy with my kindle 3!

I got the 3G+Wifi version as an insurance policy against a future irritated version of me. There was a chance that at some point in the future I would really want to use the 3G for some reason. If that future me then only had a wifi Kindle the future me would be super angry at the past me for not paying the extra 50$ for convenience.

So I went with the 3G+wifi version to insure that the future me wouldn't be annoyed.

In all seriousness, before my K3 came I spent 2 weeks in Mexico and was completely out of all wifi areas. I didn't have an ereading device and was immensely jealous of the folks in my program who I saw with Kindles. They showed off how they could buy books into the middle of the city or on a bus traveling to an archaeological site and that completely convinced me to invest the extra 50 up front because I never know when it might be useful. Heck, I spent 60$ on a case with a light for the sheer convenience... 50$ seemed like small change at that point.

Getting the WiFi only Kindle saves you £40/$50, 6g and gives you roughly 50% extra battery if you leave wireless on. Weigh that up against the benefits of having 3G access.

Other than the extra $50, I am pretty happy with the WIFI + 3G version. It has already come in handy. I often visit my neighbor for coffee and we talk about books. I can download the books immediately in her home without having to get onto her wireless network. I turn off the wireless otherwise, as I am not that interested in the experimental browser, preferring to use my phone for internet when I am not at home. I actually like the fact that there is only 1 button to turn both on and off because there is less fiddling to do. The kindle preferentially looks for a WIFI connection and, if it can't find one, goes to 3G without my having to do anything at all.

I bought the 3G version of my iPad for exactly the same reason. After 2 months, I still don't have a data plan, but I'm sure I will at some point.
