Speed reading tips and techniques?

We all like reading books - and the faster we can get through one, the sooner we can get to the next one, and the more books we can read overall.

I prefer to read nice and slow. I like to take in each word and paint the images in my mind.

I enjoy really getting into the book that I am reading at the moment, and if it is a good one I wish that it never ends ... I guess, speed-reading is not for me.

I don't want to speed read any of my pleasure reading. I would do it with legal and technical documents. you key your brain to pick up on certain words and phrases. it is not for reading for fun at all

Depends, for factual books, yes it can be a bonus; but for pleasure - take it at the pace the story wants.

Another side to this is, read faster and you spend more money !!!! (excluding library books of course !)

I like to fully immerse myself in the books I’m reading...so speed reading doesn’t really work for me :-)

I'm with Sandra on this one - I don't want to rush through a book. I read fast enough that, sometimes, I consciously make myself slow down so I can savor the experience more.

However, with e-readers, there is a tip to help speed up page turns so you aren't [mentally] dancing with impatience to get to the next page. Turn a few lines before the end of the page on your screen and then you're right at the top.

For my 5" screen, I've learned to hit the page turn button at about three lines from the bottom. So, once I hit the button, I finish reading that page just as the page turns.

That's not really a speed-reading tip, I know - but it sure does help you stay with the story flow.

that was occasionally an issue with the K1 especially with maybe oddly formatted books (you know, like the ummm dark ones...). it is not at ALL an issue with the K2. I forget occasionally and do the pre-turn. *oops*

I think it depends on what kind of book you're reading. For the books of Rober Jordan (the wheel of time) because they are so detailed I like speed-reading as it gives me the feeling of watching a movie... seeing a lot of details, you notice some and then you miss some. But for less detailed books I read at fairly normal speed.

And tips?... Dunno... I usually read kinda one sentence, then one or two words of the next and then the next sentence or when I can predict/see what's going to happen in the next paragraphs I just read single words of it. I think it's rather a personal "choice" of how you do it. But I NEVER speed read technical books/articles.

I was taught basic speed reading at uni.

First we were shown how to focus the eyes on a couple of words at a time so instead of moving your eyes from one word to the next which is labour intensive, your eyes take in two words. Just a matter of training your eyes on a different method of reading.

I can now read a whole sentence at a time and use this frequently for technical or factual books. But for novels I slow the pace down and just pick out a few words in one go.

Can have its uses.
