Post Notion Ink Adam: Pricing and more

Sounds liked we may have to wait until after the next CES.

Quote:
Four versions of Adam will be launched: each will use NVIDIA’s Tegra 2, but there will be Pixel Qi and LCD models and a choice of WiFi-only or WiFi and 3G. The company has confirmed that all will come in under the cost of a basic iPad; our source tells us that the LCD version will cost $399 for the WiFi-only and $449 for the 3G model, while the Pixel Qi version will cost $449 for the WiFi-only and $498 for the 3G model. We’ve also heard that, if Notion Ink can clinch a last minute deal they’re working on, a further $25 could be shaved from each of those figures, plus there will be special discounts for universities and students.

...

As for launch dates themselves, it’s very much dependent on FCC certification. With manufacturing set to begin in early November, Notion Ink plan to submit Adam to the FCC either that month or early December; their testing can take anything between two weeks and twelve weeks, meaning there’s a November 2010 to January 2011 window in which the tablet could be launched. If approval is secured in November, they tell us, they’ll be shipping Adam by air to hit US shelves as soon as possible. If approval doesn’t come through until January, however, then the retail launch will be at CES 2011, a year after the first prototype made its debut.

And what is the Notion Ink Eve going to be, we wonder?

Hope they can make their November window..but seems like 2011 is more realistic.

(not sure why the author repeats that tired "A-GPS" isn't "true" GPS thing. The non-3G iPad doesn't have any GPS at all. The 3G iPad has "A-GPS", which means true GPS plus assisted GPS).

I'd like to see an itouch/iphone type device with pixel Qi screen tech - and without the Apple lock-in/lock-down...that's what I'm hoping for.

Rohan Shravan of Notion Ink has commented on the SlashGear article and implied that they might file for FCC approval as early as October. I hope they are more successful than Irex was last year.

Quote:
The product will shoot for FCC certifications in the second week of November. And then it depends on them. Add few more logistics issues to that and it can swing either way. (Don’t get surprised it we hit for certification in October, cos there is some tight buffer, though that will be extremely good news).

$50.00 additional for the chi screen which is supposed to cost less is a bit of a stretch.
If the OLPC tablet comes out anytime soon with the chi screen and a cost closer to $100.00 it will put a bit of egg on their face.

The OLPC 3.0 tablet won't appear until 2012, at the earliest. It's just a concept, at this stage.

It would be a simple case of supply and demand even if it is true that the new screen tech from a single company is cheaper than lcds that can be bought from a vast number of suppliers.

I would love to have one for Christmas but it seems that the chances of that are slim, especially if they stagger the release and start with India and the US.

I hear it will be a smartphone. Although I would prefer that they make a 7" and 5" version of the Adam which shall be appropriately called the Cain (7") and Abel (5") and will be competing against Sony, Samsung, Borders, Amazon, B&N, RIM, Dell and the rumored 7" iPad from Apple.
