Wikipedia CD on the Reader

I'm trying to get the Wikipedia CD (from http://www.soschildrensvillages.org....ucation-cd.htm ) on the Sony Reader, with the hyperlinks between articles intact. I've posted my experiences with flatlrf, HTML2LRF, Librie toolbar, BookCreator and BookDesigner at
http://hnsws.blogspot.com/2007/01/tr...into-sony.html
and
http://hnsws.blogspot.com/2007/01/up...okcreator.html
but haven't really succeeded with the links. The best solution I could see was to use HTML2LRF and create separate files (separate ebooks) for each alphabet - kludgy! In case any of you have pointers for doing better than this, I'd be grateful.

how about PDF?

since the LRF/BBeB creation tools are so much not there yet... I'm wondering if you've tried creating a PDF.
I know... it doesn't reflow but so what?
You can do the "reflow" from software at "compile time" so to say, i.e. when you create the PDF, instead of at "run time" i.e. while reading on the device.

On the Sony Librie I found an upper limit of about 16MB for LRF files, files above that size crashed the Librie. I haven't tested the Sony Reader to see if it handles larger files yet.

Are you interested in the ability to press the resize button and have the pages reflow to the new font size? I ask because I have another LRF ebook binder that does non-reflow with links and <img> tag support. I haven't released it because the <img> tag support needs some more work. My benchmark 50MB of HTML content (with images) is turned into a 16mb LRF file in 17 seconds on my Macbook Pro.

If you are attempting to produce an LRF for the SOS Project I'd be interested in dusting the code off and seeing if I can produce the LRF file with it.

@sic - on my reader, PDfs are pretty slow to load and turn pages. For example, even the Sony Reader manual which came pre-installed takes approx 3 seconds per page turn. And larger PDFs take even longer - I tried converting a Gutenberg book or something converted to PDF, that took nearly 4 sec per page turn. I've read somewhere, maybe on these forums, that when the PDFs are transferred thru the Connect software, they end up being slow to load and page-turn, but when they are directly copied to the Reader's memory or to Flash memory, the PDFs are faster. How's your experience? I've not done research on that myself since I've not yet got my hands on a MemStick/SD-Card. Also, I've not done research on converting multiple html files to a PDF preserving hyperlinks between them.

@scotty - Yes, please, I'd be grateful if you can make an LRF file for the SOS CD. If the font size is big enough, non-reflow would not be an issue.

How big is "big enough"?

Medium

When a plain text file is loaded in the Reader and displayed in Medium Size - that would be fine.

An update to @sic after I tried copying some files to the Reader with PRSUtil (given by GeekRaver in the Reader Development section): Trying Oliver Twist pdf from beta.feedbooks.com formatted for the Reader, found the experience was pretty good, no slow page turns! As fast as the LRFs. Then I transferred the file with the Connect software after deleting it from the Reader, and found the page turns to be just as fast. So maybe it is a property of the pdf file itself and does not depend on the way it is transferred. The Sony manual continues to turn pages slowly, 3 sec.

This would be a great reference. It would probably sell thousands of Readers, too. Please let us know if you're successful!

hi

what's wrong with 3 seconds?
I mean... it's slow but it's still easier to work with PDFs than with SONY's proprietary format that you won't find proper tools for.

OK, sic, so any pointers to (free) tools to convert multiple html files to (preferably a single) pdf with links intact?

This process may be require multiple steps

Either
1. combining the html, then converting to PDF
OR:
2. converting to PDF then combining the result.

I found various applications that can do some (some claim they can do more). They're either command line, batch, drag & drop or print-oriented. A few even run on the server side.

a) what OS are you on?
b) do you have an example of the type of html files we're talking about. If you could link to a spot where there are a couple dozen of the html files, I can try playing with it.

I had a bunch of links here but they got lost in a glitch. I searched on

combine html to PDF
merge html to PDF

I found at least a dozen potential apps. Several had trial versions. I don't care if it's $50 or even $99 bucks if a trial shows it will work.

Regards,

Matt

I dual-boot Mandrake 10 and WinXP Prof. There are also other machines available with Win98.

The entire wikipedia download is linked from
http://www.soschildrensvillages.org....ucation-cd.htm

The wikipedia files can be viewed from

It would be nice if I can get the conversion done before Jan 19. Scotty, is that possible?

Images and I have never gotten along really well in BBeB files, there's something about them I haven't fully grok'd yet. Would it be useful as a 0.x version with out the images?

Well, something is better than nothing. If links work, it would still be a nice thing to have.
