but: Such is the nature of anonymous social networking over the internet. People sometimes behave much differently than they would in person. I expect to see flaming in some forums, the Apple forums for example as they are so in love with everything Apple that they generally have zero tolerance of any criticism of their beloved products. That can of course happen in any product forum. However it usually doesn't happen when simply discussing the possibilities of future products. Of course both of those guys have only a handful of posts between them.

I seriously consider your comment on the bigger screen e-reader IS a baseless rant. This is my expression of educated opinion without any personal grudges as a scientific professional.

Let's make a poll to collect public opinion about 12 inch kindle or other brand e-reader. The data we are going to collect will definitely prove the existence of bigger screen consumer market.

Can anybody tell me how to start a poll?

And in my opinion, forum polls or NOT necessarily representative of market realities as most buyers or would be buyers probably don't ever visit any particular forum. Forum polls are what they are, the opinions of those few who post in them.

The reason I settled for the K2.
That and the ability to have one hand free for your coffee mug while reading is an essential asset for an E-book reader.

well, is the screensize of the DX twice the size of the K2?

DX is a niche product, probably with only the iPad and entourage Edge as competitors.... as such, it can be priced higher

And don't forget, that 'expensive' DX Graphite is actually cheaper than my Cybook Gen3 was when I bought it in in 2007

We're getting spoiled for choice.

I guess it depends on how you measure the two screens.

KDX screen is 1.61 times longer in the diagonal

The K2 has a 6" diagonal length as compared the the KDX 9.7" diagonal length, so that is not double the size in the diagonal length.

The KDX has a screen diagonal 1.94 times longer than a 5" screen.

KDX screen is 2.47 times larger in surface area

The K2 screen is 3.6" x 4.8" for an area of 17.28 sq.in., compared to the KDX screen at 5.4" x 7.9" for an area of 42.66 sq.in. That means the KDX has a screen 2.47 times larger as for as area goes.

A 5" screen is 3" x 4" for an area of 12 sq.in., and that means the KDX has a screen 3.56 times larger as for as area goes.

KDX screen has 2.06 times more pixels

The K2 has 600 x 800 pixel resolution for 480000 pixels compared to the KDX screen resoluton of 824 x 1200 pixels for 988800 pixels. That means the KDX screen has 2.06 times as many pixels as the K2 screen.

A 5" screen still has 600 x 800 pixel resolution, so the comparison of pixels is the same as for a 6" screen

Conclusion

Since area and resolution are the important factors for me, I would have to say the KDX screen is more than twice the size of the K2 screen, or any comparable 6" e-Ink screen.

yes its about twice the size as far as screen, but the screen is not the entire price of the device, correct? other than the screen and storage the k2 and the dx are pretty much the same. its like having identical desktop computers with different sized LCD screens.

About this time last year the DX was touted and marketed as the best digital reader for university students to read text books on. Did that market really advance beyond a niche market? No. Would an even larger and more expensive device out sell the DX or DXG in the university student niche market? I doubt it would even come close to the number of DXes sold in that same niche market. Students don't have money. I was a grad student once, I nearly starved! Their professors and scientist do have money to spend on such devices, but they represent a very small percentage of the buyers who purchase digital readers. If I was Amazon, I sure wouldn't put out a Kindle for such a small niche market. The DXG is already pushing the size and weight envelope near it's limit, anything beyond that and I doubt many buyers would purchase it.

Kinda get tired of the over use of the term "niche product" here...please define this for me? Then go to Amazon and determine the sheer number of books formatted specifically for large format readers...there are THOUSANDS of them, covering many areas of interest. Everything from technical manuals, especially technical or reference manuals, to general interest content...hardly my definition of a "niche product". As I read the use of "niche product" in this thread, the term seems to imply a "vertical market" product appealing to a very narrow market in specific area(s). Given the number as well as breadth of large panel formatted content I take a different view of the large panel device as a small narrow vertical market, or "niche", device.

I think the main reason we are not seeing larger format devices just yet is the panel tech is not ready to handle fragile layers glass w/o breaking fairly easily. We will likely see them in pretty robust numbers once the flexible plastic panels come out in mass production quantities late this year or next year. Even just going by the current number of books formatted for large panel devices, the market for them is LARGE and far from a niche in nature. And that is before there are genuinely large EPD panel devices out there. To get a real useful large panel device right now the only real option is a tablet/slate PC of some sort or use your ill suited laptop or desktop 16:9 format LCD...maybe we need the return of rotating LCD panels like we had 20yrs back?

Is there a market for it? Maybe, but cost would be prohibitive. Another reason for people to choose an iPad over a Kindle. (Why pay that much money to be able to view larger documents when the iPad can already do that?)
Will Amazon make it? No. At least not with current technology.

If this new mythical large screen device is a Kindle Amazon would need to improve the PDF functionality for it to be attractive to me and also add ADE support.
