Newbie question about ADE

So, I've had my PRS-300 for a couple weeks now, bought a few books from the Sony store, downloaded a bunch of PD stuff from Feedbooks, used Sony software and Calibre, loaded some of my stories in .rtf and .txt, loaded several PDFs with both sony software and Calibre, no problems so far. So maybe I'm just clueless, but...what do I need to use ADE for?

Thanks, love this place,

One main thing for ADE is buying books from sites other than Sony using Adobe DRM protection...

OK, thanks, did not realize that Adobe had a separate DRM scheme. How can I recognize files that use Adobe DRM? (file extension, etc.)

They don't. Sony also uses Adobe DRM and the Sony software can be used in place of ADE to download Adobe DRM'd books from other vendors such as Kobo and Books on Board.

ePub's will all have the .epub extension whether using Adobe DRM (Sony, Kobo, BoB, FW, etc.), B&N DRM or DRM free (I assume Apple's ePub's use the same extension too)

From what I remember, the only files that can have Adobe DRM (ADEPT) are epub and PDFs.
PDFs can come with or without DRM without any change in file extension and epub can come in 3 flavours :
- no DRM
- Adobe DRM
- eReader DRM
Of course, there is also no change in file extension for epub whatever the flavour.

We shouldn't be letting the publishers choose our vocabulary for us. They want people to call DRM "protection" because that's a positive word; if something's protected, that's good, right? They're trying to put a positive spin on something very, very negative.

Those of us who don't work for publishers should be calling DRM what it is: restriction.

Another good reason to have/use ADE is if you want to "borrow" ebooks from your public library. Most libraries that have ebooks use Overdrive, which is a company that allows for the loan of DRM books. Overdrive uses Adobe DRM, which requires you to have ADE to access the epub, PDF and sometimes Mobi DRM'd library ebooks. It's a simple/free download - but, no ADE = no library books.

Happy reading.

The Sony software can do this too.
