“It was a piece of advice only, and aimed at myself as much, I suppose, as at you.—For those of easy tongues, she said. Remember, some live all their lives without discovering this truth; that the noblest and most terrible power we possess is the power we have, each of us, over the chance-met, the stranger, the passer-by outside your life and your kin. Speak, she said, as you would write: as if your words were letters of lead, graven there for all time, for which you must take the consequences. And take the consequences.”
― Dorothy Dunnett, Queens' Play

Interesting quote, but I doubt it was said by Franklin. Benjamin Franklin died in 1790. The name Bacterium was coined by Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg in 1828. Franklin would have more likely called them "animalcules", the name given bacteria by their discoverer Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in 1676.

I'm always getting those from relatives, or I used to before I started sending them back with corrections. I found the following quote here at MobileRead years ago and have used it ever since as the tag line on all my outgoing emails.
Quote:
"The problem with Internet quotations is that many are not genuine."
— Abraham Lincoln
