Too many facts are often as much of an obstacle to understanding as too few. There is a sense in which we moderns are inundated with facts to the detriment of understanding.

(Goodreads quote of the day)

When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.

- Nelson Mandela
February 11, 1990: Anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years as a political prisoner. He went on to become the President of South Africa.

I worked in South Africa for a while when I was in college. It was amazing to see the effect that he had on the country.

Today is Darwin's birthday:

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.

I have always loved his last sentence in Origin of Species

"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."

C.S. Lewis on love for Valentine's Day...

"There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket — safe, dark, motionless, airless – it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell."
