Borrow/rent ebooks

I have just googled you and haven't been through all the posts, so this may have already been covered elsewhere.

I'm Australian with a disability, and I rely on volunteers delivering paper books from the local library. I have raised the issues below on various forums but nobody seems to be interested.

I would love to have an ebook reader (probably iPad as I am an Apple fanatic) but I don't want to pay retail for an ebook I may only read once.

Instead I would love to 'borrow' ebooks from my local library but it doesn't seem to be on its radar.

I would also like the opportunity of renting ebooks in the way one rents DVDs.

Technically I'm sure each option is feasible and the borrowing/rental can expire as do trial applications.

Can someone send me down either of these paths?

My email address is dickg@activ8.net.au which may save me a search for answers.

Thanks

Dick Garner

Hi & welcome to MR. Probably not the wisest choice to publish your email addy - so you might want to take it out.

Have you tried

The National Library of Australia - not sure if there is sign up fee though.

You didn't say where in Australia you are, but here in Brisbane the library does have an eBook section. So try googling the libraries in your area.

For a good resource of great edited eBooks for free try the subforum here. All books were created by MR members, mainly from the Gutenberg project.

There are heaps more good tips here on MR where to get books from too - a lot of authors are here and offer books at low prices or even free. Keep an eye out on the Freebie subforum.

I hope this gives you a start. If you still need more info, keep looking and if in doubt, asking.

Hi Dick and welcome.

I'm surprised one of the Mods hasn't said this yet, but it's not a good idea to include you email address in posts - for your own security. There is a Persnonal Message system on Mobileread so members can always contact each other "backchannel" using that,
