Insuring your library

If my house burnt down the insurance company would replace me for my extensive and thoroughly cataloged library. I really doubt that they would do the same for my e-library. How can you make sure that you'll have future access to all your books? If the house burns, so does its content (laptops, E-books readers etc), if the retailer that sold me the E-book in the first place goes belly up I assume I won't be able to download it again. Is anyone offering affordable insurance for E-books?

I've heard talk over the last few years that some companies, such as Nationwide are experimenting with digital coverage. Best insurance is simply offsite backup.

I would say best insurance is de-drm, and backup. You can store a copy at your parents / sister / brother / friend / whatever. Or use one of the multiple online storage solution.

And you can store a back-up in a bank safety-deposit box.

Offsite backup. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just leave a CD/DVD/chip in your desk drawer at work, or at your mom's place, or anywhere else you have access to that wouldn't be at risk in the same disaster.

Online storage. I use Dropbox. You don't get a ton of space with the free account (2 gb to start, an extra 250 mb for every friend you invite, up to 8 gb) but that's enough to store a few thousand ebooks. It's also handy for remote access to your stuff.

Here, use my sign-up link, and you and I will both get a 250 mb bonus: Sign up for Dropbox here

This is the only way to really own your books. I remove the DRM, make backups.... and along with my photos, have an offsite backup in a safe deposit box.... All the insurance you need...

And Dropbox is awesome.... I may soon go to paid, to get more space......
