Exclamation WePad - Is This Device for Real?

If this is for real, I am very interested! Specs look like it could run Win7 with no problems.

Well, we will have to wait until we see something delivered for real.

We are a bit shy about this over here because another german firm (txtr) did utterly fail to meet its own published timelines on its hardware.

At least the company behind this apparently has been in the IT-business for some years but they seem to be experts in providing database- and search-software for big customer orientated firms. So this product would be a major shift in company policy.

The name of the device. Now, it sounds, well, not very promising ...

Given their choice of hardware it does seem slightly weird for them to have chosen android over windows since you would get better battery life with another chip or a wider range of applications with windows, but I guess android being free is probably a consideration for them.

It looks nice, especially if Win7 would run on it.

If you look at the specsheet (http://www.neofonie.de/pdf/neofonie_...ad_english.pdf) for it, they do seem to have used fairly standard netbook components in it, which is what makes me think they have chosen android for cost purposes more than anything else.

I actually like the idea of including Linux and upgrading to Windows myself. My netbook came with Linux and I installed Windows in about 30 minutes. But of course my netbook actually came with all of the Windows drivers on a CD, it was obviously meant to be upgraded.

This WePad does have some very nice specs, it looks like the device I have been waiting for.

The battery life is going to be hard to sell, but otherwise this looks worth watching. The 11.6" screen sounds good for Letter and A4 pdfs, which is where my interest lies, and better than the iPad or the Adam.

Releasing (Ha! That's funny. I don't see this device coming out really. If it does, the price will be stupid high, IMO.) a device with a free OS that can run Windows or OS X is the smart move. Saves a lot of money.

This is interesting:

http://www.liliputing.com/2010/03/we...s-sort-of.html

The suggestion is that the WePad is based on a prototype device from the Taiwanese company Pegatron, demonstrated earlier this year. The link above has two hands-on videos (which I've not got the bandwidth for at the moment) of the machine running Windows 7.

I understand that the N450 Pinetrail can be used in fanless designs, that would be awesome. I do not see any vent holes in the pictures, but they are not very detailed.

I saw the demo of the Pegatron with win7 on it. It looks painfully unresponsive when it comes to the touch UI. Don't know if it's the hardware or if it's just win7 that isn't suitable for touch screens.

There's plenty of hardware that shows win7 works just fine with a touch screen.
