Neo firmware release

The new Neo firmware should be released on Monday. MP3, WEP and an improved browsing experience are the mainstays on the new firmware.
It also reads DJVU ( did it before?)

I just installed it on my Onyx Boox 60 without problems. However, I can't spot much differences to the latest 1.3 Onyx firmware yet...

Here's the changelog:

WIFI compatibility optimized for WEP/WPA/WPA2 encryption.
MP3 playback has been added.
Statusbar shortcut has been added to manually pull up the virtual keyboard.
Automatically continue to webpage once a WIFI connection has been added. (instead of manually)
Power management has been greatly improved.
"Over the air" fulfillment of transactions using the (on device) Adobe Reader has been improved.
Memory usage has been optimized.
Touch screen response has been improved.
Page turning speed has been improved.
Java Script compatibility has been improved.

A note of caution - updating the firmware wipes out any annotations you have - even on books which are on the SD card! - so make sure that you do whatever it is you need to do with your annotations before updating.

Downloaded 'bebook_neo_march_2010.zip' but its size is 57.5 MB (60,296,494 bytes) not the 57.5 MB (58.883 bytes) stated the MyBeBook website. That's the 'Size' not 'Size on Disc' values.

Anyone else see this?

I think they mean that, if you do a "detail" view in Windows Explorer, the size is shown as 58,883k. It actually shows as 58,884k on my machine.

I shouldn't worry about it; if the file were to download incorrectly, you'd get an error on trying to unzip it.

I posted earlier that the firmware upgrade "loses" all your existing annotations; I've now discovered the reason for this, and how to get your annotation back again.

In the old version of the firmware, the annotation file (a file with the same filename as the book, and a ".sketch" extension) was stored in a folder called ".bebook", created in the folder containing the book. In the new firmware, the annotation file is in a folder called ".onyx". All you have to do to get your annotations back is to move the annotation file from the ".bebook" to the ".onyx" folder.

Eg, if you had a book called "book.epub", you would have previously had on disk:

book.epub
.bebook\book.epub.sketch

We now have:

book.epub
.onyx\book.epub.sketch

Hope this is of use to someone!

I don't know what you mean by "ripping". Naturally Onyx write the BeBook firmware, since the Neo is an Onyx machine.

Somehow I got the impression that Bebook was writing it. That would be the reason for the differences in new firmware release dates, wouldn't it? It would also be weird if Bebook would show Onyx logo on power up...

The new Neo firmware is based on the Onyx v1.3 firmware released a few weeks ago. It's certainly "customised" by BeBook, but the basic firmware is written by Onyx. It may well be that either BeBook or Onyx forgot to change the annotation folder name in this release.

I was hoping that those firmwares would evolve in different directions so that users can chose which one to use. It would also be a sort of competition driving further improvements.

Ah well...

Same before with BeBook One. Differences between the "original" Hanlin V3 firmware and BeBook One are marginal.
For BeBook Neo/Onyx Boox, personally I prefer the BeBook Neo one, because it's more comfortable to access the pre-defined bookstores.

I'm now convinced that the battery drains significantly more quickly with this new firmware than it did with the original. Why, I don't know.
