It's a rather short article (one line on a widescreen lol), but it makes the point. Books have passed games and are now the largest sales category in the Apple App Store based on annual sales.

That's not sales, that's just "applications available". And yes, there are an awful lot of stand-alone book apps cluttering up the store.
