Dick Sand is a 15 year-old sailor on the whaling ship "Pilgrim". Following a disaster, he finds himself captain of the ship, trying to bring the passengers back home safely, but Negoro, the ship's cook, manages to trick them, breaking one of their compasses, and eventually, after making sure the rest were lost, leads them to equatorial Africa, where he tries to sell them into slavery.
