Notion Ink releases new renders and a competition for ADAM

Remember Pixel Qi? Ok, then remember Notion Ink? remember Adam?

Well if you don't know yet, the long awaited Pixel Qi screens are now to be released in the Notion Ink Adam tablet. This tablet will be able to work as an eBook reader as well as a complete slate solution.

The last time Notion Ink released any news was in CES 2010, and now they are back. Notion Ink has just released new renders of its Adam tablet. They look great and you can see all of them Here.

Slashgear adds:
Quote:
Notion Ink will be running an Apps Competition, similar to Google’s Android Developer Challenge, to encourage software designed for the Adam tablet. Details of the Notion Ink competition haven’t been finalized as yet, but the prize fund will come in at over $1m. We’ll be talking to them more about it in Barcelona next week.
Additionally:
Quote:
Particularly of note is the battery life; Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan highlighted Apple’s “Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music” [emphasis ours] estimates for the iPad, and pointed out that, thanks to Tegra’s frugality, the same Apple hardware with the NVIDIA chip could run for 2-3x longer than the iPad manages. That’s before you factor in the Adam’s Pixel Qi display, which stretches out the longevity even more, and of course Tegra is capable of outputting 1080p HD video whereas the iPad maxes out at 576p/480p via its optional component cable.

New renders, meh. How about some photos? Looks to me like yet another vaporware to siphon off investor money.

Well as they say, the new renders are pretty close to the prototypes they have shown on CES. So I think technically it's pretty close to production, I guess they just don't want to commit without app store backing, which seems like a thing everybody needs to have today. And considering Palm fiasco with app support in the late 90 early 00, I can understand them.
All I can say, that's the product I am eagerly awaiting.

No but they said: It will make you happy!

I sense that it would be in the 300's area.

Absolutely. I think this is what left products from Archos twisting in the wind, even when they managed to penetrate into retail (that is, they're carried by Best Buy) and feature rich (despite some reports of quality issues).

Being a "Google" Android device and "just another limited" Android device can totally change the mindshare value of a device (no one cared about the G1 but stood in awe of the Droid and then the Nexus One, for example). I think the fact that the original slate did not include a camera and that the new mockups seen by Slashgear do contain a camera is a positive sign that Notion Ink is doing everything it can to meet Google's Android platform criteria and get official Android Market support.

I want to see what they build on top of the Android system. In their video they show the device doing a lot of cool things but then they say that the device won't necessarily be able to do what they are showing in the pictures but it will do better stuff. Its a bit confusing to me but I expect they will be presenting and announcing a release date and price next week at MWC so I'm keeping my eyes peeled because this is the device that I want.

I'm confused, you're saying they've shown more but then promise less? Could you give some examples?

I kind of feel the reverse. Like despite discussions about a thinner version with custom hardware and a matte screen, we still keep seeing the thicker mock-up. In addition they equivocate things like their collision-interaction demo with gaming or fractal animations with real-world java-script loads. Finally, there have definitely been on camera moments where the responsiveness of the capacitive input (whether software, hardware, or both) has be less than smooth... buttons that wouldn't work, gestures that don't register, drawers and screens that are choppy, etc. I'm not saying it's all hype, smoke, and mirrors... far from it, I'm just saying the sobering truth is that execution matters.

While I would LOVE an exception UX/GUI on top of Android, they seem so close to release (conflicting reports from various CES '10 videos, one saying March- no way!- some saying June- and others not commenting), I just want to know that all the basics run smooth as glass on rock-solid hardware before messing with add-ons.

The downfall of many of these "on-paper awesome specs" products is often half-baked hardware build quality or UX software leading to frustrating instability and returns.

Thanks for the update, looking over their updated specs it's almost too good to be true... which is getting me worried!

The other thing that's strange is that they're launching their own app store which seems like they weren't able to license the "Google Experience" (never fear, hackers always get it on Android devices eventually, just a pity it won't be official).

Last "manage your expectations" comment, they say they'll be running Flash at MWC... but I'm not sure that's a big deal knowing the underlying hard/software. I'd rather see an announcement talking about release dates and pricing, particularly since the website indicates the name Adam was specifically selected to indicate being the first or forerunner... it would be a terrible misstep for that promise to go unfulfilled forever branding the device as one with the hubris to claim "first" only to come later.

Hopefully, that means they know more than we do (which explains the site rollout) and are confident they can deliver on the promise of "Adam".

MWC gets rolling in just 8 hours!

Their site says:

Ebook Client
Now all major ebook format supported. And with amazing proprietary light sensing technology and display, digital reading was never so pleasing!

Has there been more detail than this (i.e., exactly which formats)?

guy, there's no format that doesn't run on Android and no format that doesn't run on Linux (which you can push to this device if so desired), so basically... everything.

New from MWC:

http://www.technoholik.com/news/ten-...tion-ink-adam/

Video interview (5min):
http://www.technoholik.com/news/snea...-demo-1473893/

New details include a trackpad on the back (patent filed), 3.2 megapixel swivel cam (patent filed), two versions (one with Pixel Qi and a LCD only version), the Indian version will not include 3G (but rumored to be priced at $290 USD), release date is June/July, US pricing not announced yet.

Microphone and voice controls supported, ambient light sensor, 3x USB ports (originally spec'ed at 2x), confirmed to run Ubuntu, Android 2.1, or Chrome OS. The hardware is basically finalized, with the weeks until launch dedicated to a custom Android UX.
