The iPad and e-Books: A Missed Opportunity

http://theappleblog.com/2010/02/03/t...d-opportunity/

...
It makes sense for Apple to get into the e-book game with the iPad, it’s an obvious use case for the device. But what I was hoping for from the iPad was a new format of e-books that would be a game-changer in how we consume text. The use of the EPUB format, however, shows that Apple is not yet ready to make that move. Although I applaud the use of an open standard like EPUB, the reality is that EPUB’s interactive features are very limited right now, basically limited to simple images and videos. I was hoping for more advanced features.

Well, you can read the full article, the author has the point:

What kind of features? How about reading a fantasy novel and tapping a single button to pull up a map showing exactly where you are in that fantasy world. How about tapping on any name in a non-fiction novel and getting biographical information about that character? How about textbooks with graphs that can be enlarged and class networking features built-in? And these are just some suggestions from an unimaginative dolt.

He's quoting the article so you would need to comment directly to hope to get a reply.

That author does seem a bit confused about the point of iBooks, its there so apple can get into the ebook market, if somebody wants to produce an all-singing multimedia extravaganza then there is already the option of releasing one as an app.

Perhaps the author only reads comics and picture books.

i guess the nice thing is that the software will probably be updated on a regular basis. it sounds like there's a need for a deeper file format that allows for advanced formatting and programming. the advantage of the iPad is that with its color touch screen interface, this is something that could easily be implemented with a simple software update.

i definitely hear what you're saying, i guess its a matter of the chicken or the egg. have there been any eBook readers in the past that could offer this kind of support? it sounds like what's needed is a color touch screen to have that kind of functionality, don't you think?

sooo..... now that the hardware is there... i guess its up to the publishers to start pushing something better maybe? or should apple come out with a new eBook file format?

So in other words, it caters to those with poor attention spans, and is not for those with poor self-control.

Personally, I'm hoping they can figure out how to do good text before they add more stuff to it, but I'm not against richer media integration.

gnat
Any member of several species of small dipterans, most of which bite or annoy humans. Midges are also sometimes called gnats. In North America the name is also applied to the blackfly, fruit fly, and other small flies that hover about the eyes of humans and other animals.

Here this conversation was about ebooks, and now we're talking about insects? Must be all those damned hyperlinks and distractions...

The iPad already supports these features, so does every device with a web browser that supports Javascript and multiple windows.

It sounds like the author is asking for people to reinvent the World Wide Web. If authors want to release their works as web sites, they've had ample opportunity to do so over the past 30 years. I've seen several textbook sites that operate in a way similar to his description, this is nothing new.

Frankly, this is just another example of someone confusing reading with web browsing.

Goodness grief, I sound positively BEASTLY !
P.S. In my dictionary it is spelled gnat.

They can call it EPUB all they want, but there's nothing open about it. It's a compete and total farce. Apple's EPUB is a closed circle, no different than Amazon.

From Adobe's blog:

Quote:
For example, EPUB content protected with Apple DRM won't work on numerous eReaders like the Barnes & Noble nook and the Sony Reader, not to mention future, forthcoming models. Similarly, protected EPUB eBooks obtained from thousands of online booksellers (including Barnes & Noble) and most public libraries (including The New York Public Library)—are unreadable on the iPad.

I think that main idea of this article that people expected something new from apple,
like 3D movie compared to regular movies (or if you want stereo sound compare to mono), not just iPod with big screen...
