ASUS DR-570 e-reader to sport 6-inch OLED color screen

ASUS DR-570 e-reader to sport 6-inch OLED color screen, 122 hours of battery life

Quote:
...but has dropped some knowledge on the Times Online's InGear: it's building a 6-inch color OLED e-reader, which flies in the face of previous rumors about an ASUS e-reader entry. The device, currently dubbed the DR-570 and pictured to the left, will play back Flash video, includes WiFi and 3G, and supposedly can last for 122 hours on one charge under "real world conditions." It's supposed to be released by the end of the year...

Anyone else suspecting a typo for the runtime in the original article? Makes no sense. No vague marketing source would fart out a number as ludicrously large or as ludicrously specific as 122 hours. 12 hours sure.

12 hours is about what we'd expect from a good thin/light reading tablet with a somewhat-efficient screen.

Why?
I think 122h is a good number.
One of the biggest differences between LCD and eInk power consumption. However, eInk is black/white, LCD is colour.
No LCD based ebook reader would boast more than 5-6 hours, maybe 10? OLED is clearly overtakes LCD and boasts 122. I think it is a very good number considering that it will have qualities of LCD, but no backlight, so more like eInk, no eye-strain? More over, 122h is infinitely better than any iRex product even with eInk.

OLED is still backlit, at least all versions I'm aware of are backlit. Many phones inlcuding the new Google Nexus One use OLED technology and I am sure all of these are backlit.

There is an updated article at Engadget with some additional details including that the display is actually 5.7 inches. This is the same size as mentioned for the commercial mirasol display. Could this be the first production device with a mirasol display? That would certainly contribute to a longer battery life as opposed to OLED.

Well not backlit really, just lit. Each LED gives its own light independently of others, which means a fixed backlight that illuminates the whole display is avoided.

But yeah, it's a emissive display, so it emits light by its very nature.

It's really quite hard to guess the accuracy of anything based on that article. Even if it were Mirasol, which is a remote possibility, the 122 hours figure is still a bit silly. Marketing conventions dictate that you give vague suggestions of "over 120 hours" or even "well over 100 hours" or be even more vague and give the time in days. You do not say "122 hours with regular usage" if you are leaking tidbits.

You're absolutely right, not backlit, but emissive. I would definitely agree on the odd number, why 122 versus days or over 5 days continuous use. That would seem to be a more impressive way to put it.

OLED is more efficient than LCD, but nowhere near enough to give it 20 times the battery life.
