What really blows me away (besides the fantastic storyline,) is the accuracy of the cultural depiction. Almost everything is spot on! I haven't seen that done for Japan since 'Black Rain.' It makes 'Rising Sun' seem like a comic book!

I saw Black Rain not too long ago when the book was the Book Club's selection for that month. The images are unforgettable.

Getting even further off-topic for this thread, I remember Dave Barry had a completely serious chapter in his otherwise humorous book Dave Barry Does Japan devoted to his trip to Hiroshima. That's the only instance I know of where Dave Barry wrote an entire chapter without attempting to find the lighter side of a situation.

Yes, this is true. I live in Tidewater, and read the news accounts. People were thing that a lion had escaped from the Norfolk Zoo.
