Sony, go international!

Hello there Sony!
Amazon have beaten you to the punch and released a international version of their Kindle. There are now untold numbers of people all over the world getting their Kindle in the mail, learning the joys that ebooks can bring.
How long can you sit there and watch Amazon take over what could be your market and allow their Kindle to become wholly synonymous with ebooks?
Come on Sony, it's time you cut through the bureaucracy and region lock-in and make your devices available to a good proportion of the worlds' population just like Amazon has.

Am I missing something when I read your post AprilHare?

The Sony readers, beginning with the 505 and now the 300 and 600 have been available outside the US for over a year.

And near enough every bookstore chain has an association with one reader or another, and most have an ebookstore, selling EPUB.

Have they been officially available and supported by Sony? I know here in Australia I have not been able to buy a Sony e-reader and have support here in Australia from Sony. AFAIK the Sony ebookstore is only for US (and UK I think) residence. The Kindle is in the scheme of things international compared to the Sony e-readers.

The Sony Reader is available in:

Canada
USA
UK
Ireland
France
Germany
Austria

and, I think, the Benelux countries too.

Sony are "rolling it out", but a country at a time, compared with the Kindle's "Big Bang" approach.

Sure, but as an independant publisher and a writer I sure would hope Sony would indeed go international with their eBook Store.

Sorry, not in Belguim nor in Luxemburg, only in the Netherlands.
The problem is that Sony seeks 1 partner for a whole country.
(example=belguim)
In the Netherlands (=Dutch) they are partners of Bol.com, they just sell via bol.com
In France that is Fnac (I think?)
In Belguim we have Dutch and French (and German, but they also sell in Germany...).
So logical conclusion = bol.com for the dutch-speaking part and Fnac for the French-speaking part.
+ Both companies are sending to/ operating in Belguim.

But no, Sony want one exclusive partner for Belguim.

Isn't Sony also targeting the local markets? E.g. German-language books in Germany. Amazon is selling English-language books afaik.

Apparently they've been watching Amazon clobber them for about a year now.

Sony has done a few good things with its latest models (i.e. very portable, touch screen, Google Books) but is missing a few features the combined competition offers: wireless access, larger screens, TTS, lending books. We'll see if they can get their act in gear.

What they need to do is make their eBook store available internationally. WH Smith, Waterstones and Borders.co.uk are very poor in terms of selection and price.

A little strange, Australia is usually high up on the list as a country that gets early access to devices, but they've been beaten by Austria?! Did someone make a typo in the Sony offices?

Well, Sony has always thought of Australia as the redheaded stepchild. Bunch of filthy criminals...

There is something intresting going on in Sweden. Sony Centers can sell e-book readers, but I have heard that each store have to import them (!), since Sony Sweden isn't interested. sigh. I haven't been able to confirm it, though.

In Spain, Sony e-readers are not sold, but Sony gives technical support.

I suppose this means they are going to sell it soon.
