$1.99 Kindle Books

In addition to Simple Wishes (in another thread), there are a few more 1.99 books this month in the Kindle store (I think these are the ones that are supposed to be on sale all month, but Kindle prices have been changing a lot, so they could change at any time).

Put a Lid on It is this month's bargain from Donald Westlake. You can also get God Save the Mark for $3.59, an earlier work that won the MWA's Edgar Award in 1967 and the 1977 Kahawa for $4.79

Meehan, a career thief staring at life without parole, is awaiting sentencing at the Manhattan Correctional Center when he is called to a meeting by someone masquerading as his lawyer. The man, it turns out, represents the presidential re-election campaign committee -- now finding itself in need of a little professional help. So they "outsource" Meehan in return for a walk from all pending criminal charges. All he has to do is steal a compromising video tape before the other side springs an "October Surprise" on the president. A shrewd burglar, Meehan bites, and shows just how easy Watergate would have been had they left it to the professionals.

The Naming of the Dead, by Ian Rankin

The leaders of the free world descend on Scotland for an international conference, and every cop in the country is needed for front-line duty...except one. John Rebus's reputation precedes him, and his bosses don't want him anywhere near Presidents Bush and Putin, which explains why he's manning an abandoned police station when a call comes in. During a preconference dinner at Edinburgh Castle, a delegate has fallen to his death. Accident, suicide, or something altogether more sinister? And is it linked to a grisly find close to the site of the gathering? Are the world's most powerful men at risk from a killer? While the government and secret services attempt to hush the whole thing up, Rebus knows he has only seventy-two hours to find the answers.

The Blue Knight, by Joseph Wambaugh

Ex-cop turned #1 New York Times bestselling writer Joseph Wambaugh forged a new kind of literature with his great early police procedurals. Gritty, luminous, and ultimately stunning, this novel is Wambaugh at his best--a tale of a street cop on the hardest beat of his life.

Twenty and two. Those are the numbers turning in the mind of William "Bumper" Morgan: twenty years on the job, two days before he "pulls the pin" and walks away from it forever. But on the gritty streets of L.A., people look at Bumper like some kind of knight in armor--they've plied him with come-ons, hot tips, and the hard respect a man can't earn anywhere else. Now, with a new job and a good woman waiting for him, a kinky thief terrorizing L.A.'s choice hotels, and a tragedy looming, Bumper Morgan is about to face the only thing that can scare him: the demons that he's been hiding behind his bright and shiny badge...

Hi, Karen,
Do you mind if I piggy-back on your thread here?

I've found a few that I was hesitant to post here, because some people seem to think I post too much (really? too many bargains?). So, since the thread title fits, I'll put the $1.99 ones here - if you don't mind, of course.

And maybe they might even be worthy fodder for your blog, too.

Linnet MacDonnell was the youngest of seven sisters, and not the family beauty. With her flame-bright red hair, sharp tongue, and strange gift of second sight, no man wanted her. But the devil would take her. Bartered as a bride to her father's long-sworn enemy, the nobly born Highlander, Duncan MacKenzie of Kintail, she had no choice but to enter a marriage with a man rumored to have murdered his first wife and said to possess neither heart nor soul. Forbidding and proud, Duncan MacKenzie wanted only one thing from his new bride -- to use her special gift to determine if young Robbie was truly his son. He never expected the MacDonnell lass to stubbornly follow her heart, chase away the darkness in his castle with light and laughter, and ignite a raging fire in his blood. How dare she defy him, and tempt a devil like him to feel what he feared most of all --- love!

This one by Donald E. Westlake is also still $1.99:

The Ax
by Donald E. Westlake
http://www.amazon.com/The-Ax/dp/B000...7490229&sr=1-4
~4 out of 5 stars, based on 90 reviews
$1.99 (hardcover is $27 on amazon)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review

Donald E. Westlake, justly named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, has written everything from comic capers (the Dortmunder series) to the darker adventures of ace criminal Parker during his long career. But he's never come up with anything scarier or more timely than this story about a downsized executive who decides to kill off the competition. Burke Devore could be your neighbor: a laid-off paper company manager watching his life and family fall apart as he tries desperately to get a job. The plan he finally comes up with involves murdering seven men very much like himself, and Westlake's most impressive achievement is to make the serial killings understandable if in no way justified. Selected titles from Westlake's vast list of books available in paperback include: Baby, Would I Lie?, The Fugitive Pigeon, Pity Him Afterwards, and Trust Me on This.

From Library Journal
Burke Devore, 52, laid off from his middle-management position at a paper mill two years before, decides to eliminate competitors for a dream job at a mill in New York. He places dummy ads in trade journals to attract them, then stalks and kills them (at first with a pistol, later in a variety of disgusting ways?most in broad daylight, with no witnesses). That's about all there is to this strange novel from the author of the John Dortmunder mystery series, e.g., What's the Worst That Could Happen? (LJ 9/15/96). A potentially compelling look at the effects of long-term unemployment on the psyche of a man of limited prospects and intellect, the result is merely a step-by-step guide to executing innocent people, generally lacking in conflict, irony, and farcical elements. Devore's wife and children are sketchy, and humorous situations are underdeveloped. The point of all this is buried deep. Not recommended.?Laurel A. Wilson, Alexandrian P.L., Mount Vernon, Ind.

Hope Town
by Brendan P. Myers
http://www.amazon.com/Hope-Town/dp/B...7503724&sr=1-1
~3.5 stars out of 5, based on 2 reviews
$1.99

Product Description
The small, sleepy village of Hopeton isn’t all it appears . . .

At the end of a bad day, Parker nurses his wounds at a local watering hole. There he meets a woman. Turns out her day was almost as bad as his. Almost. After seeking solace in each other's arms, they find themselves unwittingly thrown together in a deadly race for their own survival.

Because two others are in the bar that evening, one a predator: the town bigwig with a cash flow problem, and one prey, the bank president who refuses to help. Big mistake. Because Bobby Jo knows a dark secret and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

From the high-rises of downtown Boston, to the high seas of the Atlantic, to the dirty sandlots of a sleepy south shore town, events move inexorably towards a pulse-pounding climax.

It’s a small town. Maybe even something like your town. But all may already be lost for the good citizens of . . . Hope Town.

Storm Killer
by Benjamin Blue
http://www.amazon.com/Storm-Killer/d...7504534&sr=1-2
~4.4 out of 5 stars, based on 11 reviews
$1.99 (the paperback is a whopping $22.99)

NOTE: Please be careful if purchasing - there is another Kindle edition available, but it is priced $7.99. The link above should take you to the $1.99 edition. But if it doesn't please select the 'view all formats' option and select the $1.99 Kindle edition.

Product Description
Hurricane Edna is growing by the hour and Florida is squarely in her path. The United States has built the Storm Killer Project, a huge orbiting defense system, which may be able to destroy the hurricane before it reaches land. The station is operational and about to attack the hurricane, when acts of sabotage threaten its very existence.

The saboteurs inflict enough damage on the station that the technology designed to defeat the hurricane is actually strengthening it to a category five monster.

The three-person NASA security team, on board the station, is the only force available to thwart the saboteurs' plans, and prevent the failure of Storm Killer.

Kim Danby, a woman addicted to drugs caused by years of physical and emotional pain, leads the team. The other members of team, Lieutenant James and Dan Hoch, also have flaws and black marks that make them vulnerable. Each must battle their own personal demons as they pursue the investigation.

Even when one of the team is murdered, the others continue to follow the evidence and unravel the clues that lead to the identity of the conspirators hidden within NASA's and Washington's highest-ranking command structures. They must arrest the perpetrators in time to stop the destruction of the station by a Russian nuclear missile.

As the conspirators are unmasked and arrested, their leader senses his plan is crumbling and flees by a well-planned escape route. He thinks himself safe from law enforcement.

Little does he suspect that he needs to fear his own kind more than the law!

I have several others, but it's well past 3 am here in Insomnia. And I should probably try to call it quits for the day/night.

Just because one (or two?) people think you're posting too much, just remember this, please: You're providing information that is very useful to most of us, and working tirelessly in doing so.

My advice is this: Continue on with what you're doing. Most of here really appreciate all your efforts.

BRAVO! to you efforts in pointing out these bargains!

Not a problem tagging on (and keeping the 1.99 titles together for a month might be a good idea). A couple are from last month's 1.99 deals, but a couple are not (and not everyone may have seen last month's post).

As for "too many", I apparently don't know where to draw that line in my personal library, either. I do, though, try not to post all the self-published books here (maybe one thread a month with that theme and those who don't want to read it can skip?), but put them on the thread in the Kindle forum now and then.

My opinion as a Moderator is that the books are either "Freebies" or they're "Deals." If people don't want to read about Freebies and Deals, then they can skip to something else, as you suggest.

I wouldn't even worry about it.

However, you've caused me to spend a bit more money than I had planned!
