espionage... so 50's and campy...

I was watching Bond vs Goldfilger these days on netflix. Boy, such non-sense stravaganza. The British Intelligence is not after industrial IP theft or dictatorships menacing the free world, but after bizarre poker players with a finger for gold and chinese stoic servants.

Hoping Ian Fleming writing was better than this hollywood crap...

Vince Flynn, dont mind the tendency to be preachy, damn good author. Brad Thor and last but definitely not least, new comer Ben Coes, whose 3 books are fantastic.

Let's not forget some of those older authors - E. Phillips Oppenheim, Baroness Orczy (Scarlet Pimpernel), John Buchan. More modern authors Alan Furst and Daniel Silva are worth reading. Also, I would put Jack Higgins Sean Dillon series in the espionage / thriller category.

Strictly speaking, these two write top notch political thrillers rather than spy stories, but I suppose the political thriller is first cousin to the espionage story.

I started reading Fleming. Downloaded all the Bond epubs without guilt, since the author, son and wife are long dead and no one deserves the money.

So far, so good with Casino Royale. There's a definitely serious and better tone that was lacking in the campy movies from 60's and 70's.

I'm also reading The Riddle of the Sands, which arguably is thought to be the precursor to all XX's spy thrillers.

Although probably not true "espionage", I wanted to add one of my favorite authors, Nelson Demille. He was also on the list above by sglinert.

His most recent works focus on anti-terrorism. My first introduction to his books was Charm School, set in Russia, and is closer to an espionage story than some of his other books.

It's worth noting that this is "Joel C. Rosenberg," who is not the "Joel Rosenberg" who died in 2011 and primarily wrote SF/Fantasy.

Wow...lots of names to go through.
I discovered the Brian Freemantle/Charlie Muffin series late last year and went through the whole thing in a couple of weeks (and was amazed to see new titles are still coming out) - would definitely recommend.

Discovered a fairly new author through my library (think his thrillers are new, looks like he also has some PI titles): Adrian Magson's Harry Tate. He's former military intelligence, transferred to MI5, then he gets burned in the first book - which reminded me a bit of Six Days of the Condor...

Red Station - Adrian Magson
First in the brand-new Harry Tate thriller series - Having been made the scapegoat for a botched drugs intercept operation, MI5 officer Harry Tate is dispatched to 'Red Station', a remote outpost in the Balkans, ostensibly to avoid press scrutiny, but where in effect the security services send 'problem' agents they'd like to be rid of. But the outpost is thrust into the international spotlight when troops begin massing in the area; and, as the situation becomes increasingly dangerous, Tate discovers the real, truly shocking, purpose behind 'Red Station' - and decides to fight back . . .

Also really like Brian Haig's Maj Sean Drummond, though I guess those probably fall more under political thrillers.

Liked your list, but was surprised to see Helen MacInnes was missing. I read and really enjoyed her books through the 80's but she started writing at the beginning of WWII. If you're looking for a new author then some of her books have just been published as ebooks.

I started with his John Corey series. He's not at all what I expected -- he really makes me laugh

Thoroughly enjoying my romp with Mr. DeMille (I'll have to check out his stand-alones one of these days).
