Kindle International now $259

It appears that the Kindle International is now $259. Everyone that bought it at $279 will be getting a $20 refund.

Along with this the US Kindle (Sprint only) seems to be no longer available.

It makes sense to me that they would drop the US only unit since the International unit works in the US as well, and having two production units would cost more to maintain.

You know, that's a suspiciously identical price point to a certain newly announced reader...

When the same happens for the DX, then there will be no more new kindles on the sprint network. I can't imagine that the contract with sprint is perpetual... since the kindles do not have wifi, then if the sprint contract dies or if sprint dies, then amazon would either have to replace all sprint kindles or make people buy new ones. I guess they could enable side-loading...

Curious, does amazon guarantee a wireless connection for the kindle for as long as you own it or only for the duration of the warranty?

That's a good question. But, I think as long as you are buying ebooks from the store they are going to keep paying Sprint and keep it going.

Woah. Busy busy week for ebooks.

I guess they were just clearing out the old Sprint inventory. I expect they'll keep the Sprint Whispernet going for a long time, since there are quite a few Sprint Kindles out there. Ugh, I hate getting caught on the bleeding edge....

Is it feasible for them to switch Sprint Kindles to AT&T Kindles with a firmware update? I forget which flavors of wireless they both use. Are they completely incompatible?

I never understood why they went CDMA in the first place - they were going to have to produce a GSM version eventually so why not start with GSM?

Kindle has been at that price for a few weeks, BEFORE the nook was announced.

But not the International Kindle, and they're making a fuss about a price cut to the same price point as the Nook.

All Amazon did, was get is get rid of the Sprint Kindle, and have the AT&T one take it's place.
