Benson, Robert Hugh: Initiation, LIT v1, 18 October 2009.
A late novel by Monsignor Benson.
Sir Nevill Fanning is a young Catholic baronet. He slowly begins to understand the Catholic doctrine on atonement and suffering when he develops a relationship with a girl who has a serious personality disorder, then later becomes seriously ill.
As ever, Monsignor Benson has some lovely descriptions of English country house life, and a keen analysis of his characters’ interior life.
This was made from scans from The Internet Archive. The cover image is a woodcut of a garden in Frascati, where some of the earlier scenes of the novel are set.
