Kindle 2 GSM version potential to cause problems?

So I was just wondering your opinions on whether the Kindle 2 GSM version has the potential to cause issues for Amazon and ATT. If you take the sim card from the kindle, it has been confirmed to work for data (evidently no phone works). If people start yoking the sim cards from the Kindle and popping them into netbooks and the such, this could cause a lot of issues. Obviously its the same issues that came up with trying to tether the internet connection from the original kindle, but its been made a lot easier now. Any thoughts?

I doubt there is a SIM card in the K2. The "SIM" module is most likely soldered to the circuit board and will not simply fit into a mobile phone/netbook.

No way Amazon would miss that...

So people are really going to turn their new Kindles into 260 dollar bricks just so they can use the sim card for a short time before it gets turned off? Wow geeks are so smart.

There most certainly is a SIM card in the K2 International:

There certainly is a SIM card. It is a requirement of the GSM standard that a device have a SIM card.

You do realize its very possible to swap IMEI numbers right? It's illegal, but very possible. Swapping an IMEI would allow you to make the network think the Kindle is still being used when its actually something else.

Assuming you get 4 months out of the service (even if it gets shut off) that's 60 bucks a month savings for 4 months at about a total of 240 dollars. I can see someone attempting this, and if it works, in the end you get a free ereader without wireless support.

Sorry, are we sure this is a GSM device (aka 2G)? Or is it a 3G device? Does anyone know for sure?

Judging the picture we have a 3G device:

Here's a description of its features.

You've said this before. Can you point me to a reference? Is their any reason the SIM can't be integral to the circuitry? Or only work with a specific device?

Someone pointed me to a reference, Bob, the last time this came up. I'm afraid that I don't have the link, but it was definitely "authoritative" - on the standards body's web site.
